Every network printer or print server has a unique IP address associated with it. This address is either configured manually or set using an automatic network protocol such as the boot protocol, reverse address resolution protocol or zeroconf. You can normally find the IP address of a printer on the printer's control panel or by printing the configuration page. Select the printers and faxes tab from the control panel. Right click on the printer those you want to find the IP address and click properties. Then click on the ports tab to display the IP address of your printer.

The status for the Canon MX870 goes to offline without me doing anything and then I have to turn it off and on to get it back online. Is there a way to keep it from going offline or turn the feature (???)...

Just check this. Go to the Printer and Faxes window in the Control Panel. (whether you are running XP, Vista or Windows 7...click Start, look for Control Panel then Printers and Faxes). Look for the printer icon for the Canon MX870. Right click the icon and you will get a little menu. If you see an option that reads: "Use Printer Online" select that. This is typically the problem. If you see an option that reads "Use Printer Offline"...don't do anything with this option and there is some other cause of your problem.

Cant load driver in port lpt1

AN IEEE 1284 port is a parallel port protocol. Lpt1 is a physical port on the PC that attaches to the printer.

Basically, the PC is telling you that it expects the printer to be connected to the LPT1 port on the printer and that it is expecting the printer to be conversant with the IEEE1284 protocols.

Given what you have described, you should not be having a problem connecting the PC to the printer.

Please let me know what the exact failure is and the make and model of the printer that is causing the communication between the PC and printer to go "Toes Up."

The Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) protocol
automatically assigns an IP address from the range:
169.254.1.0 to 169.254.254.255. If the APIPA protocol is
disabled, the default IP address of a Brother print server is
192.0.0.192. To change it, use the printer control panel (if
applicable), the BRAdmin Professional, Web BRAdmin software
or let your DHCP server allocate an IP address to the printer.

Using the HP Toolbox
The HP Toolbox is a Web-based program that you can use for the following tasks:
● Check the printer status.
● Configure the printer settings.
● View troubleshooting information.
● View online documentation.
You can view the HP Toolbox when the printer is directly connected to your computer or
when you are using a supported network connection. You must have performed a complete
software installation to use the HP Toolbox.
NOTE You do not have to have Internet access to open and use the HP Toolbox. However, if you
click a link in the Other Links area, you must have Internet access in order to go to the site
associated with the link. See Other links for more information.
To install the HP Toolbox, you must install the TCP/IP protocol and the most recent version
of the Java™ Virtual Machine on the computer. You must also install the DOT4 protocol for
all USB connections, LPT connections for Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and LPT1
connections for Windows 98 S.E., Windows Me, and Windows NT 4.0. See the system
administrator or computer manufacturer's documentation for more information about
installing the TCP/IP protocol and the DOT4 protocol.
