You cannot. The black screen indicates that the computer has not booted up or that there is something wrong with the video circuits/screen. Black screen not uncommon when you have motherboard failure.

try booting from a cd like the reinstall cd for windows that came with the computer. when starting hit F12 to show 1 time boot menu; select cd drive; hit any key when asked to boot from cd. This will tell you if its a software or hard drive problem.

Run the same procedure again and choose factory settings. It wd do so , unless the recovery partition got corrupted.

Consider downloading a specific release of Ubuntu; eeebuntu. Download the ISO and then conenct an external DVD device to it, during the BIOS screen, choose the ESC button and boot from the external device.
This Ubuntu-specific group offers three kinds of ISO's (simple, super basic, and a loaded release), all of which allow all parts to work out of the box:

If this does not work, check the informal eeepc forums

Turn on your computer. Right away there will be a black screen. You can restore factory settings without a CD, too. This will reset your BIOS.Press F1 when the black screen appears; you will enter the setup configuration mode. You will be presented with a menu.Select Restore Factory Defaults. Your computer will do all the work for you. As with the CD, this process may take several hours.
