GE PTAC 5500 series cooling and then blowing hot

I have had it for years. This Summer it was working fine, Then one day I went to the sun room where it was located and the room was steaming. The unit was blowing hot hot air. I can turn it off or unplug it and it will cool again for a while. Interesting is that when I have it turned off but plugging in I van still heaR COMPRESSOR NOISES.

CLEAN YOUR COILS AND CLEAN THE FILTER. THE DUST, DIRT, DEBRIS IN THE COILS ARE PREVENTING PROPER AIR FLOW, CAUSING THE COILS TO FREEZE UP, PRODUCING WARM OR HOT AIR. WHEN YOU TURN IT OFF, THE ICE OVER THE COILS DEFROST UNTIL YOU TURN IT ON AGAIN.

To clean the coils:

1. Remove the front cover of the PTAC Unit.

2. Unplug the PTAC unit.

3. In a spray bottle, add 4 bags of UNSWEETENED Lemon-flavored KOOL-AID, and fill with water. Shake well to mix.

4. Spray the coils with the entire solution and allow to sit for at least 30 minutes to allow the CITRIC ACID in the KOOL-AID to clean those coils.

5. While waiting for the coils to clean, take the filters and THOROUGHLY clean them. Bump them and shake them to remove any unwanted water.

6. Fill the same spray bottle with clear water.

7. Plug your PTAC unit into the receptacle; and turn your system to the COOLING mode, HI Speed.

8. While the system is running, spray the coils with clear water to thoroughly rinse the coils.

9. Replace the front cover to the PTAC Unit.

9. Replace the filters.

10. Enjoy the comfort of your PTAC A/C Unit.

Cooling gas is missing. Call some AC service in near to fill it, ask more of them for price. Do not switch it on until you solve this to prevent higher damage.

SOURCE: Problem with GE Zoneline 5200 model

Heat pumps have saftey circuits that prevent liquid flooding of the compressor. Inadequate airflow across the evaporator in cooling can trip this circuit. Have your package unit serviced with particular attention to cleaning the evaporator coil and be sure your filters are clean and changed frequently in the summer months. Hope this helps GL!

SOURCE: Will not cool properly.

You have either a faulty thermostat, dirty condenser and evaporator or a faulty run capacitor. Need to service soon before the compressor is damaged. Sea Breeze

PTAC Blows Cold Air in Heating Mode when it reaches -3F less than the Set Value on the Thermostat - Model: AZ65H15DABW6

It sounds like your PTAC (packaged terminal air conditioner) unit is malfunctioning. When the thermostat is set to heating mode, the PTAC should be blowing warm air, not cold air. There are a few possible causes for this issue:
  1. The PTAC may be low on refrigerant. If the unit is low on refrigerant, it may not be able to properly heat the air.
  2. The PTAC's reversing valve may be stuck in the cooling position. The reversing valve is responsible for switching the flow of refrigerant between heating and cooling mode. If it is stuck in the cooling position, the PTAC will blow cold air even when the thermostat is set to heating mode.
  3. The PTAC's heating element may be malfunctioning. If the heating element is not functioning properly, the PTAC will not be able to heat the air.
I recommend contacting a trained HVAC technician to diagnose and fix the issue with your PTAC. They will be able to determine the cause of the problem and repair it properly.

How do I buy a compact refridgertor to go on an outside covered deck in Raleigh, NC?

Most compacts will work but I don't think the glass door is a good choice. Think of your house windows. Cold in winter--hot in summer. I would stick with a solid door and on extremely hot days, a fan blowing against it may help. I have a GE on my outdoor patio in PA near the border of WV and it works fine but we don't get as hot as you will. We get a few days close to100 but not a lot.

Ptac has been in sun room for about 3 years. Turn on heat and it only blows cold air.

May be your thermostat setting wrong. If corrected check the heating coil.

Ptac heating problem

This is the service manual for this system. It might give you an idea on what the problem could be. Page 27 should be your area to start. There are two for the PTAC series. I'm not sure which one will pertain to you.

How to best run this thing

Hi Laurelrobin,
When the unit is on "low fan", it is fan only, and is recirculating room air. If the damper is open, it can also bring in outside air. If the space is not occupied for extended periods, it's OK to turn the unit "OFF", as long as you have a newer unit with Heat Sentinel, and the Heat Sentinel is turned on. Heat Sentinel will not let the room temp get above 85F, as long as the unit is OFF. Also, in most cases it's best to keep the damper closed. You can check your owner's manual for more info on the Heat Sentinel and other auxiliary functions. I also have an article on the temperature limiting functions of the GE Zoneline.
