First of all, did you test the primary and secondary leads for resistance? They all should be from 2-30 ohms max. If they are, the transformer is fine. If they are open, you will need a service manual which may be on-line. If you need more assistance or would like to inquire about repairing your unit, please visit my website at audoserviceclinic.com. Thank you.

Onkyo shorted speaker

Hello
Disconnect the speaker connections and switch ON the set. Set a multimeter to measure volts, and measure the voltage acorss the shorted speker terminals at amplifier end. There should not be any voltage at all. That is, the voltage measures at the speaker terminals must be approximately equal to Zero. If hter shows any voltage, make sure that the output amplifier to that side is shorted. never connect an other speaker, even for checking. It will also burn out.
Connect speaker to this channel, only after rectifying the fault, if any.

How do I get my Samsung TV audio to output though my onkyo tx-sr608?

If it is a relatively new TV you should use an optical digital audio cable. These are often called "toslink" cables. Plug one end into the "digital audio out" port of your TV, and the other into a free toslink port on the receiver (there are two on the back and a third on the front of the 608).
You should then change the settings on your samsung tv to: - turn the digital audio (s/pdif) output on - allow bitstream output over s/pdif - turn the tv speaker off I am not sure which model Samsung you have, so I can't go into great detail, but I'm sure you will be able to find the relevant settings, most likely under "sound" in your system menu.

lastly, you will probably want to use the input assign page of the onkyo on-screen menu to assign whichever input you use to your TV, and change its name accordingly.

Measure all hdmi inputs and output HPD Voltage by a needle probe.
Steps:
(1)unplug the amp.
(2)open the cover.
(3)connect a blu ray player to hdmi input & a mon to output, otherwise no 5V.
(4)negative probe connected to the large heat sink with large power transistors mounted by a crocodile clip.
(5)postive probe to right hand side last pin called hot plug detect, HPD.
(6)If it has 5V, hdmi board is OK. Check HDMI cables(7)If no 5V, check power to this board. Go to you tube:How to fix an Onkyo receiver - TX-SR606 . All large capacitors next to SMPS IC are replaced.
(8) If not OK, replace Q 8595-Q8597.
(9)If not OK, replace Q8501,sil9135.(Onkyo won't help you to replace this HDMI decoding Chip. A HDMI board replacement instead, the company policy.)

Abrsvcs HELP still out there?

Sorry about the delay, I did not see this posting.

The other speaker configs utilize the surround processing section. In stereo, the surround processor is bypassed. Based upon your brief description, I would think that the surround processing section is producing DC voltage which is detected by the output section forcing the unit into protect mode. This is not a problem that is easily diagnosed remotely. One thing to chech, if you can, is the power regulators on the surround board. Make sure that the solder connections are good. If they are OK, then I would suggest that you get a detailed estimate from a local service shop. Report the results here and we'll work through the actual repair.

Schematics for the Onkyo

Benimur,

I don't have the info on the initial question/posting, but Onkyo systems I have worked on often have open driver transistors as well as shorted outputs. With one of the driver transistors open, the voltages tend to float to one side. The 18V you mention sounds like that is what is happening. have the initial asker replace the driver transistors (as a pair) just like the outputs.

Keep me posted.

I hooked up a fiber optic cable directly from a samsung hdtv to my onkyo surround sound system. Sound, however, does not come out of the speakers. Also, I am running cable directly to the tv from the wall...

Make sure that the place it is plugged into the TV is an output and not an input for the fiber optic cable, and the place it is plugged into the Onkyo is an input and an output for the fiber optic cable. This can be connected backwards very easy. Then you want to make sure that the Onkyo is properly set on the right function to listen to the TV. Check your owners manual on how to set up the optical input and have it assigned to the function you are trying to use. Sometimes these type of receivers have an input mode button that you can set to "optical" or "analog" or "digital" or "auto". Try changing those settings after you make sure the TV optical is an "OUTPUT" and the optical on the Onkyo is a "INPUT".

After you have these thing set right you should be able to listen to it like this.

I hope this helps, if you need more help just reply back on this post, but please give more detail about the connectors and on the TV and the Onkyo, and about the digital input settings on the Onkyo. It would also help to know the model numbers of both the TV and the receiver. There is no way to check out what each of your devices are capable of doing without knowing the model numbers to look up the specs.

Thanks,

Dave

The unit is in protect mode because a problem was detected in the output section. In all likelyhood, the output transistors have failed or a secondary power supply hs failed. Because this was the result of a power surge, I would suggest that you take this to a sericer and request a detailed repair estimate. This could be as simple as a voltage regulator gone bad to the microprocessor being fried. This is not a problem that can be diagnosed remotely.
