SOURCE: SMC2804WBR router: The lights are on but nobody's home.

Sounds like the router is about to die. I had the same issue with a wireless router a few years ago. It would broadcast but I would not be able to get onto the wireless no matter what I did but plugging straight into the modem and it worked just fine. If you've done a hard reset and it is still not connecting or staying connected, it is about time to replace the router.

Wireless LAN button won't switch off.

Most Netgear routers have a recessed button on the back or bottom panel, marked "Reset" or "Restore Factory Settings". Because the button is recessed, you will require a thin tool to press it. Most people use a straightened paperclip.
  1. Power up the router, and wait for it to complete booting up, typically about one minute.
  2. Press the Reset or Restore Factory Settings button until the test or power led starts blinking. This takes about 20 seconds. Release the button.
  3. Wait for the router to reboot.
  4. Log in with the default password. If the reset was not successful, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
  5. Unplug the router's power.
  6. Press and hold the Reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
  7. Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
  8. Wait for the router to reboot.
  9. Log in with the default password.

if the reset button wont work better to replace the router. But before replacing try the following steps first to reset your router.
Step 1: Plug the power of your router wait until the lights are fully initialized.
Step2 : Reset your router by pressing the reset button or hole with atleast 5-10secs.
Step3: Open a browser (ei, IE Mozilla or Google Chrome etc.) and type the specified IP address on the address bar.
Step4 Then type the username : Admin password : 1234 or leave it blank.
Hope it helps.

BLINKING POWER LIGHT WON"T RESET

A Blinking Power light on a wrt-54g usually indicates that the firmware is corrupt. You can try to wipe the firmware by following the steps below:

unplug the router
using a paper clip or pin, press the reset button
plug the router back in while the reset button is still pressed down and hold it for 30 seconds.
once you let go of the reset button the router should go through a reset. if it still blinks try the process again.

if the issue still occurs then it may be bricked.

Cant get into router settings to put in ssid & network key

Use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router. Use this method for cases when
the administration password or IP address is not known.
Using the Reset button

To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the administration password
or IP address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.
1. Press and hold the Default Reset button until the Test LED turns on (about 10 seconds).
2. Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot.

the defaults will be applied ie;

192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and admin/admin

Two router home network problem

Can you still connect to the Internet with the Linksys router? I suggest that you go ahead and reset the SMC router to clear up your previously configured settings. Then before reconnecting it to the linksys router, make sure that you can access its web interface via 192.168.1.1. Don't disable DHCP as your computer won't be able to obtain an IP address from it automatically. Do not change other settings. Next, disconnect the ethernet cable and check if you can access the router interface wirelessly. Once done, connect SMC's WAN port to Linksys' numbered port. Make sure SMC's WAN light is on, as well as the light for the port you used on the Linksys router. Check if you can get online.

With this configuration, the linksys router is now acting like a modem, and the SMC as your router. As long as you're online when wired to the linksys, you should also be able to access the net on the SMC once you physically connect them.

Connection of internet

Try to power cycle the router and modem. Unplug the power of the router and modem for 30 seconds. After that power on modem first, wait for the lights to go steady then power on the router. If all the lights are solid, try to check if you can connect wireless

You can also try to reset the router. Look for RESET button at the back of your router and press it for 20 seconds, then unplug the power of the router for another 20 seconds then power it back on. Check if you can connect wireless

Router cant b found

Locate the reset button on the rear of the router.
Should be below the antenna and recessed use a paper clip or similar to hold in for 10 secs.
This will reset the router back to factory defaults.
Type in 192.168.2.1 into your browser and you should get the routers setup page. Click the login button, no password is required. You can set this up yourself once in the router setup.
Be aware this router is NOT on the Xbox live supported list.
