What causes the "Reduced Engine Power", "Service Stability Control" and "Traction Control" warning lights to come on?

I have had several issues recently with my 2005 Grand Prix GTP. I was forced to stopped short and shortly thereafter my check engine light came on. I brought it to the dealer and was told codes were thrown for brake switch and catalytic converter. Before I was able to have either possible problem resolved, the "Charging System Failure" came on and I was unable to start my car. I replaced the battery that same day. 30 days later and I am having a whining noise when accelerating and the "Traction Control System " warning light comes on for no apparent reason. The "Reduced Engine Power" light came on 2 days ago while sitting in heavy traffic and I lost all power. I was able to restart the vehicle and drive 3 miles before I lost power a 2nd time. I had the car towed to the dealer for service. They said it threw 14 codes but the only issue they could find was some moisture in the main connector. They took care of that and told me that if it happened again to bring it back. I drove the car the next day and the "Service Stability System" light came on. Would you have any idea what could possibly be happening?

The "Reduced Engine Power", problem causes the PCM to disable "Service Stability Control" and "Traction Control" turning on the warning lights to come on for those systems . The reduced engine power is because of a problem with the electronic throttle control system or as GM calls it TAC system . Reduced Engine Power Mode
When the PCM detects a condition with the TAC system, the PCM may enter a reduced engine power mode. Reduced engine power may cause one or more of the following conditions:
• Acceleration limiting--The PCM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however, the vehicle acceleration is limited.
• Limited throttle mode--The PCM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however, the maximum throttle opening is limited.
• Throttle default mode--The PCM will turn OFF the throttle actuator motor and the throttle will return to the spring loaded default position.
• Forced idle mode--The PCM will perform the following actions:
- Limit engine speed to idle by positioning the TP, or by controlling the fuel and spark if the throttle is turned OFF.
- Ignore the accelerator pedal input.
• Engine shutdown mode--The PCM will disable fuel and de-energize the throttle actuator.

Have you ever had the catalytic converter changed. Over time the pellets inside will melt together and this will make the care very very sluggish like it does not want to run. You may want to try that.

I have a 2008 Saturn outlook with 2w drive. I recently drove in wet weather a my Stabil Trak and traction control indicators

When the Stabilitrak and Traction Control indicators come on and stay illuminated in your 2008 Saturn Outlook, it typically indicates a problem with the vehicle's stability control system. This system helps maintain control and stability during adverse driving conditions, such as wet or slippery roads. There are several potential causes for these warning lights, and it's essential to address the issue promptly to ensure your vehicle's safety and performance. Here are some common reasons for the warning lights to stay on:
  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Issues: The Stabilitrak and Traction Control systems rely on information from wheel speed sensors to determine if a wheel is slipping or losing traction. If one of these sensors is malfunctioning or dirty, it can trigger the warning lights.
  2. Faulty ABS Module: The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) module is closely related to the stability control system. If there is a problem with the ABS module, it can affect the functionality of Stabilitrak and Traction Control.
  3. Damaged Wiring: Damage to the wiring that connects the wheel speed sensors to the control module can disrupt the communication and trigger the warning lights.
  4. Malfunctioning Control Module: The control module responsible for the stability control system can develop faults or errors over time.
  5. Brake System Issues: Problems with the vehicle's braking system, including worn brake pads, can sometimes lead to issues with the Stabilitrak system.
  6. Faulty Steering Angle Sensor: The steering angle sensor is part of the stability control system. A malfunction in this sensor can lead to warning lights.
  7. Low Fluid Levels: Low brake fluid levels can trigger the warning lights, as the stability control system may interpret it as a potential issue with the braking system.
To diagnose and address the problem, you should take your Saturn Outlook to a qualified mechanic or a dealership. They can perform a diagnostic scan using specialized equipment to pinpoint the exact issue that is causing the warning lights to stay on. Once the problem is identified, they can recommend the necessary repairs or replacements.
It's important not to ignore these warning lights, as the stability control system is designed to enhance vehicle safety and performance, particularly in adverse driving conditions. Addressing the issue promptly will help ensure the continued safe operation of your vehicle.

How to remove the malfunction light from the dash

If you disassemble the instrument cluster to disable the light, an open circuit is created and the powertrain control module is put into a "limp in" or "service" mode. You maximum engine rpm is reduced. You maximum vehicle speed is reduced to 50 mph and several other systems are disabled (like stability control and traction control). You're better off just having it diagnosed and repaired properly.

What does it mean when the "Reduced Engine Power", "Service Stability System" and "Traction Control" warning lights come on?

You may have to have the harness replaced. Be sure the connector innards stay dry. When they get wet the contacts will oxidize and start shorting to each other and also the oxide is an insulator causing connections to open. Good Luck, I had a water problem with a Ford Flex and even though covered under warranty since I was the second owner they would not honor it. It cost me about three grand so price things out before getting it fixed, the car may not be worth the investment.

Reduced engine power

Have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ! Do you know what electronic throttle control is ? The gas pedal assembly has electrical connector an sensors inside ,hooked to the PCM / ECM - engine computer . The engine computer uses these position sensors inputs to control the DC motor on the throttle body to open the throttle plate to control the speed . Plus there are position sensors inside the throttle body to input PCM/ECM to see if it's calculations are corect . Your best bet maybe to take it to a qualified repair shop .

My car is saying service ESC

That light means that the computer control module has detected a fault in the Electronic stability control system and it turned on the light to alert you. Right now the system is turned off for your safety. You now need the system scanned for the fault code that is set in the control modules memory.
