I would try to get clothes out, even if destroyed first. Otherwise,
there is a plastic cover cap on the top of the agitator. remove
by unscrewing or prying off. Hold down nut is exposed and remove
carefully, gently and with a ballanced pry up from underneath to raise agitator.

The agitator is actually pressed on without mechanical fasteners . Grab the bottom of the agitator firmly on each side. Pull up with a quick, hard **** (careful not to hit your face). If this does not work, wrap a belt under the agitator. Grab the belt firmly and pull up with a quick, hard ****.

for the basic top loader there should be a cap on the top of the agitator you can pop off with a flat screw driver and then use a ratchet with an extension to get to the nut holding the agitator on, 1\2 inch or 9\16 socket, i think.

i believe this unit has a fabric softner on top of the agitator ... the cap should come off and there is a 7/16 or 1/2 inch head that will have to come off then the agitator pulls straight up... if this one does not have a cap on top of agitator grab from bottom and pull straight up sometimes it requires some muscle..... this was a common problem with g.e. units... i am a owner of a appliance /heating and air company out of texas see this alot...... good luck to you a/c and heating unlimited

the agitator should pull straight up, you may have to twist it back and forth as you pull upward. when you put it back on make sure its all the way down and in place, this may be the reason your clothes are getting stuck under it.

The agitater is not solid and clothes catch under the arms on the bottom and tangle and have even ripped. What can be done about to stop this? It seems like a design flaw to me.
It is not the best of designs.

Sometimes, clothes will get stuck at the bottom when the agitator dogs are worn out. Check to see if the upper part of the agitator is working during the wash cycle. If it isn't, the clothes stay at the bottom and just move horizontally, not from the bottom to the top. The clothes then get stuck in the gap between the lower agitator vaens and the bottom of the agitator. This is a very easy repair, you need only a socket wrench set (SAE) with an extension.

You can also buy the dogs (pawls) by themselves in a pack of four for about $5.

When I first saw this agitator set-up, I asked myself, 'What were they thinking of?'.

Clothes sometimes get under the agitator requiring the removal of agitator to release. Also, clothes get wrapped around agitator
Sounds like your agitator is not assembled correctly. It should not have things getting stuck constantly and it should definitely NOT be so easy to remove. Feel around the bottom edge of your agitator. If there is more than a 1/8 - 1/4 inch gap (roughly), it's not being snapped all the way down. Take a towel and fold it to where it is nice and fluffy. Lay it over the top of the cone part of your agitator. Get a hammer and hammer over the towel (as not to damage the agitator top). A rubber mallet could also be used. Tap firmly until you hear a click or until the gap between the agitator and wash tub reach 1/4 -1/8 of an inch. This should solve the problem.

Remove the top part of the agitator or the cap and you should find a bolt in the center. Remove the bolt and pull up on agitator.

98702 is not the model # of the machine. you should find the model # either on top of the machine or in the dryer door area around the frame.

Clothes stuck under the agitator
you really have clothes stuck under the "wash plate" it has almost zero clearance and would be very hard to get something stuck under the wash plate.
if you do have something stuck, then remove the 1 1/2 inch cap in the center of the plate, then a 7/16th bolt that holds the plate down. then grab the wash plate and lift up to remove it.
next time check your pockets and dont let this happen again, it could ruin the outertub by cutting a hole thru it and then leaking.

How to remove the agitator??
remove agitator cap ,,looking down in agitator removre the plastic seal with a firm yank,,now you can see the agitator hold down nut,,remove that bolt with 1/2 inch nut driver or wrekit,,pull agitator..if clothes is jammin it down take you belt and slide under agitator,,and pull booth ends ,,but away from your fast ,may come up fast..always unplug

Necklace stuck in washer
Hold the bottom part of the Agitator,(The part that you are talking about),Undo the very top part in an anti-clockwise direction and it will come right off.Use a wrench to remove the nut on the top of the agitator and then lift it right out,you may need to move it from right to left.You will now be able to remove the necklace.Replace the Agitator the reverse of removal.

Remove the center plastic cover with a little flat scre driver,
then remove six screw size 10 around
lift the round plastic base for you to remove the bedsheet.
VERY important qhe putting back the six screw to tigh them not 1,2,3,4,5,6 clockwise, go 1,3,5,2,4,6. Hope this help

I would remove the agitator, checking to see whether the bolt that holds it to the drive shaft is securely tightened. If it is tight I would then check the agitator for a serial number, usually molded directly into the plastic agitator on the inside bottom. Use the internet to determine if the part is the correct agitator for your specific model of machine. I have seen the wrong agitator installed on machines before and it can do a number on clothes, especially sweaters.
