Wet dog smell
Hi!, This is Jim with Crucial Vacuum
If you're looking to get nasty odors out of your vacuum the best approach would be to thoroughly clean all detachable parts, including the canister with hot soapy water. Allow these parts to fully dry before reinstalling!
For those hard to reach places a handy way to get a fresh smell in your vacuum would be to disperse baking soda on your carpets, let it sit for 30 minutes, and then vacuum as you would normally. This will not only give the inside of your vacuum a cleaning, but will leave your carpets smelling fresh as well.
If you're looking for any replacement parts, or accessories for your Dyson vacuum you can purchase direct from Crucial Vacuum with free shipping and an exclusive 10% coupon for Fixya.com readers, use code: FIXYA10

I don't agree with the suggestions of adding a scented oil, this masks the smell at best. The way to fix this is to clean every part thoroughly, and to soak the filter in cider vinegar to clean it since soap will ruin it. I have found that this will get rid of the smell right away. Worst case is you can buy a replacement filter, which is not expensive on Amazon.
I personally have a DC-07 and I place several drops of lavender oil on the filter. Makes all the difference.

I had this problem along with a clogged filter. I used the solution for clogged filter here on Fixya and the dog smell went away too. It has to do with the flange on the cylinder getting pushed up out of position. Give it a try.

Here is a copy of the cleaner's user guide, in case you don't have yours to hand:

SOURCE: how many filters in the Dyson DC23 canister
Hi Julie,
In normal use, DC23's filter should be washed at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for it to dry completely before replacing it.
The HEPA post-motor filter does not need maintenance, and is designed to last the lifetime of the machine.
If you have any further questions about using or maintaining your machine, please call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).
Best wishes,
Jack
