This happens over and over and has always been a problem with this machine and it does it whether in straight stitch mode, decorative mode or when using BSR. It does this half a dozen times, then will sew 30 or stithes, then begins same cycle again. Have had it in the shop for cleaning and tech doesn't seem to find the problem. Also inconsistent when doing decorative stitching. I CANNOT figure out what problem is and it's so frustrating because I like the machine in so many other ways. I expected better from Bernina! Also getting decorative stitch to repeat numerous times doesn't seem possible, have to keep pressing the escape feature to continue. What am I doing wrong for set-up? The manual is no help.

Basically it is a matter of a stuck part. Flip open the top by prying up on the front or ends of the lid. You already noticed the hinges on the back. When you get it open, exercise the right hand lever on top (marked ZZ at bottom and 1-20 at top. If you look just to the right of this lever against the back wall you will see that it moves a little part back and forth into triangle shaped grooves. The part is not going completely into the grooves so drop some oil in there and exercise it a few more times, using your fingers if necessary to make the part move into the triangle grooves at the front and back. After a while it will loosen up where it should operate by itself smoothly . Hope this helps, I know it will.

Sounds like its skipping stitches. The very first thing to do is put in a new needle. A dull needle will cause this for sure.
After that it may take a tech to make some adjustments.
1) The hook is slightly out of time. On this type mechanism, there is
a slight difference in timing for the different needle positions.
2) The needle bar is slightly too high.
3) The hook and needle are too far apart, and then the skipping would
be more apt to show up on light weight fabrics.

see your local dealer and tell them you have a bad power board. or l-print. this is a known issue and bernina is covering it under there 5 year warranty. the 5 volt output is faulty on some some models
SOURCE: Bernina Aurora 440 knotting below my fabric and into bobbin area.
Are you sure you have the bobbin the right way round in the holder....when you look at the bobbin and tug the thread, the bobbin should move clockwise.
Pull out the foot pedal and use bsr2 with the start/stop button.
Bring bobbin thread to top of work before starting to sew. This may help knotting problem

you will most likely find that just adjusting the stitch length and width controls for a while will correct the problem (if the machine has been sitting idle for some time the stepper motor linkages seem to stiffen up a bit but i have good success with continual adjustment until they free-up.
also try switching machine off and on again to ensure it resets correctly.
the combination of both above fixes works 95% of the time - otherwise, as you mentioned circuit board and or stepper motor replacement may be necessary (however if both length and width are playing up it is unlikely to be an electrical fault).
