Ok, try to peel the chip off, and replace it with one of the chips from the toner casettes.

you might be able to fool the machine so that it thinks there is a new non hp imaging drum installed

in the hp 2840 (internally the same machine) you will be able to choose "ok continue with non hp material" on the display

You will need to replace the image drum. This is either due to the face that you have exceeded the number of pages/cycles that the drum supports or the drum has damage. If this is the drum that came with the printer, it is likely they shipped it with "starter" supplies which last a fraction of the time as the regular "full retail" replacement supplies. A URL for HP's instructions on how to replace tn image drum on the HPCLJ 2550 series follows:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=125&prodSeriesId=388394&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=388394&objectID=bpl12241

Imaging drum LED stays on continuously

When the Imaging Drum LED stays solid on, it means your imaging drum is running low and will soon need to be replaced. You can unseat, then reseat it and see if that solves the problem.

If everything is printing fine, don't do anything until the LED starts flashing. HP will tell you to replace the drum immediately, but mine was on for a year, with moderate printing, before going to the flashing, "empty" state. This is the same advice as for toner cartridges, which are sometimes as much as 50% full when the light comes on.

However, I suggest sourcing a new drum so you can be prepared for when the existing one goes out. Also, despite HP's warnings of gloom and doom, aftermarket products work acceptably.

Printing quality off? 2550 HP laser jet?

When installing new cartridges, it's always a great idea to perform a cleaning and recalibration of the machine. Below are the steps needed to do just such a task. You may want to print these out or save them somewhere for future reference as well. They are directly from the HP website.
Please rate the tip accordingly and thanks for using Fixya.com.
Cleaning the printer
  1. Verify the printer is turned on and in the Ready state.
  2. Open the HP Color LaserJet 2500 Toolbox. Click Cleaning Page on the Troubleshooting tab, and the click Print (HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500) or Cleaning Page (HP Color LaserJet 2550). A page with a pattern prints from the printer.
  3. Remove any paper that may be in tray 1.
  4. Remove the page that printed and load it face down into tray 1.
  5. At the computer, press Clean .
Calibrating the printer There are two methods of calibrating the printer manual: at the printer or from the Toolbox on the computer. From the printer Turn the printer off and then on again. From the HP Color LaserJet 1500 or 2500 Toolbox on the computer

Page count unreasonable

Re you using genuine HP NEW cartridges? If not, you must make sure that whoever has re manufactured the ones you are using has replaced the chip on the cartridge. This tells the machine how many copies are on the cartridge.
