The unit was running when we came in. No Storms in the area. it was blowing hot air, but was still on the cool setting. There was a burnt wire smell coming from the unit. And the diag. code was Br. I found this odd since it still had power.

Hello,

If you can hear a click or see a light when you turn your thermostat from up to down you do have power there. Or, you can put a meter on your thermostat and see if there is any voltage or not. If not in either case, you can try this if you feel qualified around live power.

Turn off the circuit breaker to your heat pump at your master circuit breaker on the home. Tape that circuit breaker open with red duct tape or regular duct tape and don't let anyone near it while you do the remaining.
Remove the electrical service panel at your heat pump.
Look for a service panel breaker, reset or inline fuse.
Replace or reset if able and see if your heat pump comes back on when you turn your circuit breaker back on and your thermostat is down to 60.
Since you say you had an electrical storm when this occurred I would be surprised that your master electrical panel didn't pop your circuit breaker out to your heat pump. Failing that the service panel on your heat pump should have popped a fuse, reset switch or breaker. Failing all of those, you will need service from your a qualified service tech for your model maker. Your home owner's policy may cover expenses above your deductible. It would be worth a call to your Insurance company should the voltage rectifier circuit on your heat pump have been destroyed by the electrical storm.

Hi, last night my smeg dishwasher cut after 20mins. There was a lot of smoke and a strong burning smell. We have taken off the front panels, however there is no sign of any burnt out wires. Do you have any...

Many times if the wiring becomes loose in the connection box itself (where the house
wiring connects to the machine itself). The wire nuts will burn out and create
quite a smell. I have seen this numerous times where aluminum wiring was
connected to dishwashers. (Note, make sure breakers are off to the circuit before
removing the cover to inspect as the leads may be in contact with the metal cover)
If this is not the problem, I would recommend having a licensed electrician over.

Our GE dishwasher has been working fine for years. Now it is tripping the braker? all wiring is good right to the dishwasher. We did smell burnt wires but it went away.?????

Your dishwasher may be damaged beyond repair. When I installed the dishwasher in my home I found that there is a surprising number of wires bundled under the dishwasher. If you are skilled in that field you can pull the dishwasher out and try to repair the damaged wiring under the machine. However once you've smelled burned wiring it means that there are potentially significant problems in there. You aren't smelling the burnt wires anymore because the damage is so great it's just tripping the breaker. If you continue to try and force the machine to work in this situation you may end up with a fire and further damage.

Please be careful.

Grinder will not turn on

Maybe carbon brushes or motor.
Unplug.
Unscrew and pull back cover nearest cord.
Brushes should be touching rotor, the copper segments, and not too short. Smell for burnt offerings from the motor.
Some tools have thermal protection too.
See if there's a thermal fuse, which looks like a small shiny rod with a wire each end.
It could be inside sleeving.
On an electric motor, this is usually embedded in the stator, or field windings.**
This may have blown if grinder got too hot..
**Would need complete strip-down to inspect.
If motor is cooked, get wallet out.
Motor-parts/repair labor may cost more more than a new grinder.
Carbon brushes:
Take sample to store, with make/model of grinder.
Brushes fairly cheap.
Hope this helps,
Clive.

A week ago our oven stopped working during cooking. I had my husband flip the circuit breaker and it still didn't work. 15 minutes later we were able to get it to work again. Today i started to preheat...

Had similar problem with my oven.
Turn off the breaker to the oven/range and remove the panel which exposes the controls. You will probably find a burned spot on the pc board.
Mine was where a spade lug plugged a wire to the board and caused by a loose connector at that lug. I hard wired/soldered the wire to the board (new board was $200+) and the repair lasted several years.

Smells like burnt wires

It is very possible it may have burnt wire or burnt capacitor. Remove unit, remove top cover and look inside to see if you see any burn marks or burnt wires. Also check fuse to see if it is good or not.

Duo Therm 57915.541

Since you have a knob, I am assuming that this unit has manual controls that are mounted directly below the air conditioner on a ceiling pack. If you smell burned wiring, remove the inside shroud to access the 120VAC connections in the unit. Check these connections for OK, if they look burnt, cut them back and reattach them (be sure to turn the breaker off first). Try the AC again.

If those connections look fine, then remove the upper cover from the unit. Access the capacitors on the side of the unit and check them for ok. If any one of them looks burnt, replace it. These two places are usually the only place that you will get a burned plastic smell.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Headlights won't work

relay was stuck.  Now you replace the relay and a few burnt fuses and the burnt wiring.  You should have fixed this at the first warning sign of a problem...sadly, now you pay the price for not doing so.

Burnt smell

Most like the capacitors on the inverter board or power supply are going leaky.. if you look at the board you will notice that the caps are puffed out at the top. replacing them if difficult and if you don't have the skill to replace them have a good tech do it.. repairing the board is much cheaper that replacing them.
As the caps get worse the set will stop cumming on.
