Working device (DVD/CD rom burner/reader) not reading disks
Device Manager indicates this device (listed as a dvd/cd-rom device) is working properly.
It does not read any type of disk (none of the software for burning or reading seem to "start" the drive).
This pretty much happened "over-night" but shortly after a windows update (operating sys: it's running XP).
Listed under "disk drives" in device manager is the ST9808211A which was the same (except before the suggested MS-autofix it was listed right under "dvd/cd-rom drives", not under "disk drives" (but no matter the location, the drive still doesn't read anything)!
PC is an HP laptop (pavillion entertainment), drive is a lightscribe (TSSTcorp TS L532M) that reads and writes DVDs, CD-R/RW...uninstalling the device and the driver (from MS site) did not have any effect. Any idea if there is another fix, anyone???
Double-checked with hubby, he insists he did not d/l anything to laptop (said he wouldn't, since it's mine)., checked files by date (last couple of days), nothing new seems to be "hovering" anywhere.
Virus check revealed nothing (rest of system is running fine)...quite frankly, I am at a loss (but starting to sound like "needs-a-new-dvd/cd-burner-syndrome"...lol)! Haven't really used the drive during the first 2 years, now it's dead after burning about 20 disks within 12 days...lol...
(oh, and for those suggesting the "upper/lower filter fix: believe it or not, regedit search for "filter" or "lower filter" revealed none found...lol)!
Tried just about anything I could think of...(click on the underlined *more* after the "chopped" message to see what length I went to...lol). HP system restore "bit the dust" after the first "MS update" install and would not re-install (error messages of incomplete install every time I tried to at the HP site). There is no older driver to back up to...I have started to suspect a file "conflict" (maybe an over-write from the "MS update"). But while we're on the subject another question: Just used ROXIO to burn a perfectly good DVD (data disk via "roxio classic" menu option), now Roxio tells me "no disk in drive" as I am trying to burn my second one...lol (using verbatim DVD-R 4.7, a decent "mid-level" disk, never had problems with those before, but just to be sure it wasn't that one disk, I tried 6 more off the stack with the same result, even tried to reboot the machine, to no avail). I am near "my wits end"...LOL...now my desktop is trying to "rival" my laptop...ROFL. (arrrrrrgh!)Tried just about anything I could think of...(click on the underlined *more* after the "chopped" message to see what length I went to...lol).

Have you tried reinstalling the driver for the DVD drive from the HP site? You didn't give the (complete) model number for your laptop. If you post it, (Using the Comment button) I will direct you where to download it from. Another option would be to try to do a System Restore. Not a complete restore, but one using the option when you select Start>Help & Support. Select a date before you did the update. Awaiting your reply. Click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cddigital cd audio for this cd rom device or scroll to dvd regions select the no _ for your specific area
First you need to check your DVD rom drivers if it is detected in the Device manager window, Just click on Start , Control Panel, System then Device manager there you can check the list of all your devices.
In Device Manager look for DVD/CD-rom drives click the arrow or plus sign on the left to show he sub Menu.
Check to see if there are any Marks such as question marks, Exclamation Points or Red X's.
Hopefully there are none of any, if there is try uninstalling the driver then restart the machine it should automatically reinstall the DVD/CD-rom.
Now to get the not reading error, Click on Start, then on the Start Search Bar type on REGEDIT then press enter.
This will open the Registry Editor Window.
In the Registry Window follow this key path = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Once the dvd/cd-rom appears a list on the Right pane window will show, on the list looke for upper and lower filters then delete both then close the registry window then restart you computer.
This should help restore you DVD/CCD-rom back to a reading state.
click start control panel, administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cddigital cd audio for this cd rom device or scroll to dvd regions select the no _ for your specific area hope this helps
cd drives are plug n' play, check your device manager see if the device is working properly, if its not then delete the device and restart pc to redownload the drivers. please contact me if it is sowing that the device is working, I have another solution for you to try.
Not trying to insult your intelligence, but let me ask this? Do you know if your CD, or DVD drive is a burner drive, first of all? Generally on the outside of the drive unit, it will have CD-R/RW for a CD burner, and DVD-R/RW for a DVD burner. (Read-Read/Write. It will Read from a disk, and also write back to it)
You can also check the Device Manager, and see how this drive, or if you have more than one, both drives are listed.
Left-click on Start>Right-click on My Computer>Left-click on Properties>Left-click on the Hardware tab, then go down, and Left-click on Device Manager. Give Device Manager a second or so, to load.
Now Left-click on the -> + sign next to CD/DVD-ROM drives. If your optical drive is a burner drive, it will have RW in the name.
If you know the optical drive in question, (If you have more than one optical drive, be sure your blank CD-R disk is in the burner drive), is indeed a burner drive, let's go on.
Download the school picture to your My Pictures folder. By default it should go there. Then go to My Pictures, (Start>My Pictures), and find the photo. Left-click on the photo. There will now be a blue frame around it. Go up to the top left side, and left-click on -> Copy to CD.
when you say disk did you mean hard disk? if you do... did you recenlty install a new hard disks?... if you did... did you check the jumper-master-slave configuration when installing the new hard disk?
only one hard disk can be configured as master in each ide channel. set up to master (not single) the one on the end of the ide cable and set up to slave the one attached to the midlle of the ide cable.
check that both hard drives are properly attached to the cable and that the power cable is properly seated.
when you say disk did you mean cd rom disks or dvd disks?
does it work in other computers? if it doesnt.. you cd/dvd disks may be the problem
are you trying to read a dvd disk on a cd rom only drive... you can't read a dvd in a cd rom drive.
if you cd/dvd rom drive should read the disk you're putting in, check in device manager if your system detects the cd/dvd rom drive. if it doesn't: check the physical connections (reseat ide cable, check jumper configuration for slave and master on your cd/dvd rom drive and check that the power cable is properly seated), check also in device manager the properties of the cd/dvd rom drive and check if it says on device status if the device is working correctly. if it doesn't post the error code that it may give you or google a solution with error code.
suggestion.. be more specific when posting your questions.. that way it will be easier for a solution to be provided as your issue could be interpreted in different ways
