If the printer will startup with no cables connected but 49's when you plug in the network cable then a computer on the network likely has a corrupt job in it's print queue that is causing the 49 error to occur. Your best option is to connect the printer to a workstation or laptop with a USB cable and update the firmware that way if you cannot find the workstation that is causing the problem. Keep in mind that the 49 error might occur after update if that corrupt print job continues to be sent.

What model of HP LaserJet do you have?
You will have to go into the configuration menu on the printer itself and set up the network connection.
I don't know what model you have, but here is a generic answer
Press the Menu Right until you find the HP MIO Menu - Select it.
Next press the Item right button until you find the Cfg Network Card = No, - make it say yes by pushing the value right button, then push select to put an asterisk ( * ) next to it.
Then press the item right button until you find Cfg TCP/IP = No, - make it say yes by pushing the value right button, then push select to put an asterisk ( * ) next to it. (assuming you are on a basic network)
Last press the item right button and insert the following information.
IP Address: Not one already in use - generally 192.168.1.XXX (where XXX is some number between 2 - 253)
Subnet Mask: generally 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP Address: Generally 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.1.254
Once you give it this information, print out the config page and it should be there. If this doesn't work, or you don't know how to find those numbers, I would be glad to help you further.

Hi 123sha:
49.XXXX
PRINTER ERROR
To continue
turn off then on
A critical firmware error has
occurred that caused the
processor on the formatter
to abort operation. This type
of error can be caused by
invalid print commands,
corrupt data, or invalid
operations. In some cases,
electrical noise in the cable
can corrupt data during
transmission to the printer.
Other causes include poorquality
parallel cables, poorconnections,
or home-grown
programs. On rare
occasions, the formatter is at
fault, which is usually
indicated by a 79 Service
Error.
1 Press CANCEL JOB to
clear the print job from
the printer memory.
2 Turn the printer off and
then on.
3 Try printing a job from a
different software
program. If the job
prints, go back to the
first program and try
printing a different file. If
the message appears
only with a certain
software program or
print job, contact the
software vendor for
assistance.
4 If the message persists
with different software
programs and print jobs,
disconnect all of the
cables to the printer that
connect it to the network
or computer.
5 Turn the printer off.
6 Remove all memory
DIMMs or third-party
DIMMs from the printer.
7 Remove all EIO devices
from the printer.
8 Turn the printer on.
9 If the error no longer
exists, install each
DIMM and EIO device
one at a time, making
sure to turn the printer
off and on again as you
install each device.
10 Replace a DIMM or EIO
device if you determine
that it causes the error.
Try new network card

using 64 bit windows 7, and tell me that Windows cant find a driver for HP.........i install driver and nothing........
SOURCE: 49.4C02 error is coming on
Printer error 49.4c02 may occur due to corrupted print queue. Just clear the queue and restart the printer and the error may be fixed. This would seem to work for most cases. If none of them are corrupted, check to see if any of them are in an uncommon size. Larger printings tend to result in this error as well. Check if it's the cause by clearing the queue then printing normal-sized documents instead. The error may also be caused due to complicated fonts as they are harder to read, especially if they're in color or written in a pdf format. If this is the cause of the error you can either stop printing such documents and update the drivers or firmware. The drivers may contain bugs which cause the printers to act this way, so updating them will solve the problem. get more information and help Printer Error 49.4c02
SOURCE: Hewlett Packard Laserjet 2605dn Printer: Error 79 after firmware update
HP has now admitted their firmware update causes an irreversible corruption in the formatter board. It is hard to get them to do this, but I understand they will repair at no cost if they can determine that you did install this update.
