I cannot unlock my Maxtor!!! I have my password but it will not accept it. Problem may have occured when Maxtor was unplugged and turned off for a time. I may have added to the password when it was reinstalled. I can't remember the original! Senior moment I guess!! Can I reprogram it with a new password?

Make a windows 98 se bootdisk
copy the atapwd files in there
start dos
Unlock the harddrive.
Do not buy anymore Maxtor hard drives! They lock and you cannot unlock them! Happens WAY TOO MUCH. wasted 3 already!

I had the same problem. What I did was install the Maxtor drivers twice, then shut down the computer. Restarted the computer. Then, with the computer on, I unplugged the drive firewire, waited 15 seconds, plugged the firewire back in, then pushed the one touch button. Windows then recognized it in about 1 minute. I still have a locked drive icon but I also have the drive now recognized with a new drive letter.

When my MAXTOR 3200 was pluged in to my MAC computer the green indicator light came on, the external drive symbol came on to my start menu,but a box came on to the screen saying-----
THE DISK IS LOCKED,READ ONLY,OR COMPLETELY FULL.
What can i do to unlock it?

Maxtor 80GB drive is not allowing writing to disk. Disk Utilities shows the drive is not full and unlocked and read/write. however any coping, expanding functions to the disk fail. the is sme error message that is not helpful.
It is a new disk and run through USB to Mac OS x.

Maxtor external drive. Out of the blue is now 'locked'. I went to my computer, right clicked on the drive. Option says 'unlock', sweet! ha, it was SOUR, did NOTHING. Have minimal tech knowledge. Need help, how do I unlock the drive so I can not only recover but archive all my family photos on it once again?!?!
I have a 100GB external hard drive and it also is locked. This happened after a power outage, and now I cannot access any information on it.
The second Maxtor ext HDD 500 Gb to crash on me! PC just suddently unable to recognise it. Used to work straight away after formating/spring cleaning PC HDD, without having to install maxtor software.
System restore doesn't work back to a time when things were ok.
Loading Maxtor software for first time now, My Computer icon has Maxtor locked drive. (I never had it password protected).
Have tried computer management/disc management & it doesn't come up in either top or bottom pane. R clicking on icon to 'unlock' does nothing.
Have tried differnt firewire & USB cables & also tried it on laptop, with exactly the same results ie- recognising a bit of hardware but not being able to unlock it.
Nothing on the Seagate/Maxtor website helps. There must be some way out ??!!
