when i plug the av cable in to my xbox 360 the E 74 system error message comes up

  • Anonymous Jul 21, 2008

Turned my xbox counsel on it flashed green for a little bit then section 4 (lower RIGHT hand quadrent) started flashing red and a system error screen with multiple languages appeared. E 74..... So far I've unplugged everything and took out the hard drive let it sit for awhile then put it all back together. Still flashes red....... I'm wondering how this happened because I haven't played on my 360 for 4 days...... I'm thinking about borrowing a friends AV cable just to make sure I don't have a faulty cable.... I'm worried that it has something to do with the scaler chip.... :(

Is there anyway at all to fix this WITHOUT having to send in my xbox?

  • TFO Scooter Mar 05, 2009

    i don't understand.

how can the Av cable be bad if i have been using the same Av cable for three years now?

Just one day it was like i hate my life and commited electronic suicide?

And Its funny how in the first three years i had my xbox nothing went wrong but as soon as my warranty ran out, ive had to fix three different rings.

Is it just me or does it seem like xbox made the xbox to throw up their insides after 3 years?

Ok this is what i have found out The Bottom Right Red light Flashing is

1022 AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (could also be a problem with the encoder chip)

try getting a new av cable should do the trick and i know this post is old But it should help people who are having this problem

E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU.

There Is a bit more info

Actually, the E 74 error is a problem with either the scaler chip or the a/v cables, not related to the HDD or DVD at all...

LOL I love how the "most helpful" comment is not even about the right error.

The only thing you can do in this case is see if it is the A/V cables, by switching cables with someone else's WORKING 360 or buying new ones, but that's almost a waste of money because if it's the scaler chip, the new cables won't work and you're out the money for them- and you'll still have to send it in.

Xbox will repair this if it's in warranty, and they're pretty helpful about it- ours said it was out of warranty, even though it wasn't yet but we didn't have the receipt anymore- and they went ahead and repaired it for free for us anyway.

Well i called microsoft and talked to them about this (i have same porblem) i am sending xbox 360 to get reparied but first you should do is take all the cables from the back out, power, internet exct. then put in see if work, if doesnt take out hardrive give it a good clean. if that doesnt work take out hardrive and turn on 360 see if it works if it does its the hardrive that is broken if not its the 360 its self so CALL microsoft and send it to get fix the price is: $132 when you get back you get 12 months warranty and 1 month gold xbox live subscription.
the phone number for xbox support/microsoft is :1800 555 741

Hi,

This is often a hard disk or HD-DVD related error, if you have either of those addons attached try removing them and see if the console works. If that fails your best bet is to phone Microsoft.

Hi, I had the same problem, 1 red led, and Error 74 showing on the screen. I took out the hard drive, and turned the xbox on, and the problem got fixed.

I got my hard drive back on, and the xbox is working 100%
hope this helps.

My xbox has also got the 1 ROD. my xbox was a month out of warranty and they gave me a free repair! The E74 is a hardware failure not the AV cable.

If you have E74 and 1 red light, you then take all the cables and accesories out and then take the hardrive out. Then put the cable back in but leave the hardrive out. If it still doesnt work it needs to be repaired. I wouldnt try doing it yourself incase you mess it up!

I just had this problem happen to me, three years after the manufacture date. Never had any problems before this, I must say that despite the bad rep Microsoft seems to get. Customer service is very helpful. I will send it to them , and let them fix it. Your 99$ before tax im guessing gets you another year of warranty. One thing i thought good to mention is that if you have a fancy faceplate or anything take it off and send the box in without it. They might not return your faceplate if something else is wrong with your box. oh and of course keep your cables, and harddrive.

I wrote this article and it has allowed my Xbox 360 to work for over a month now. The trick is to wait the extra day before turning it back on in my opinion. Give it a try!

Hello,

IF YOU HAVE A SOLID BLACK LINE RUNNING VERTICALLY THEN YOU HAVE A FAULTY MATRIX INVERTER. IF CENTRAL THE MAIN VERTICAL INVERTER NEEDS CHANGED. LEFT = LEFT VERTICAL INVERTER RIGHT=RIGHT.........

ANOTHER WAY TO GET THIS FAULT IS WORN OR DAMAGED RIBBON/PLASTIC GOING FROM THE SCREEN MATRIX TO THE INVERTER

Hope this will help out in solving the problem....

Clearing message after "replace photoconductor kit" message came on

To reset the photoconductor page count:
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. While the printer is off, press and hold the Select (pattlnk_1262005_1956-enus20772_selectbuttonicon_t64x_en_us.gif) and Return (pattlnk_1262005_1950-enus21096_returnbuttonicon_e340e342_en_us.gif) buttons on the operator panel.

    pattlnk_1262005_208-enus21096_oppanelbuttons1_e340e342_en_us.gif

  3. While keeping both buttons held down, turn the printer back on. Keep holding down both buttons until the printer screen displays Performing Self Test or CONFIG MENU.
  4. Release the buttons when you see either of these messages.
  5. If Reset PC Cnt does not then appear on the screen, press the left or right menu button until it does.

    pattlnk_1262005_2017-enus21096_oppanelbuttons2_e340e342_en_us.gif
  6. Press the Select button once. The message Resetting PC Cnt Value should briefly appear on the screen, indicating that the photoconductor page count has been reset.
  7. When the display shows CONFIG MENU again, power off the printer.
  8. Wait five or more seconds and then power the printer back on. NOTE: Do not hold any buttons down when powering on the printer during this step.

The photoconductor page count should now be reset. At this point, it is recommended that you print a menu settings page to confirm this. Do the following:
    1. With the printer at the Ready status, press the left or right Menu button until UTILITIES MENU appears on the screen.
    2. With UTILITIES MENU on the screen, press the Select button once. A new menu should appear.
    3. If Print Menus is not displayed on the second line of the screen, press the left or right menu button until Print Menus appears.
    4. Press the Select button once. The message Printing Menu Settings should appear on the screen and the printer will print out one to three pages of printer settings.
    5. Look for a heading labeled Cartridge Information on one of the menu settings pages.
    6. Under Cartridge Information, look for the word Photoconductor. Confirm that the level of the photoconductor says OK or is close to 100%.
    7. If the photoconductor is still reading low, try printing 10 - 20 more pages.
    8. Print the menu settings page(s) once more. Confirm that the photoconductor level is now at OK or close to 100%.
    9. If the photoconductor continues to give a low reading, repeat this entire procedure again from the beginning to reset the counter once more.
    10. If the photoconductor reading is still low after two attempts to reset the counter, the printer may require service.
