Our fridge is a 1996 model. We moved in and inheritted it. It's a top freezer with a inside ice maker. Lately the ice has been coming out with little centimeter or so piece of what look like dust/lint covered tape. It's so disturbing to find these little floaters (god knows what it is) in our glasses or water bottles. Does anyone know what this is? We cannot for the life of us figure out how to get to the filter to even see if we could buy a new one for such an old model. Does anyone know where it is and how to fix it? Or is it that we need to clean/replace the piping? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm totally clueless and obviously we have no manual.
Hi,
Replace your ice maker. Your ice maker mold is flaking and collects into the ice. Good Luck

Hi again, yes the ice maker is simple to change. This would be a couple of screws and a clipped wire harness to change this. Over time the ice maker due to calcium will deplete the mold and cause flaking, this only appears within the ice cube. Also the causes a slower production as it take longer to release the cubes from the mold during production. With a model number I could send you the correct part number if you like. Good luck

SOURCE: refrigerator side freezing
kjn, I think what happened here is that the automatic damper assy. is stuck in the open position. This is why everything froze in the refer area. This includes the water filter and cartridge. I would unscrew the filter cover and see if it's frozen in there. If you find the filter frozen, take a hair dryer and go over it lightly until it will unscrew. After that you will have to check to see if the damper is stuck. You should be able to hear it open and close by turning the control on and off. Or get a mirror and hold it at an angle in back to see the gates. Part number for the damper motor is 240440701. Not that hard of a job...Catriver.

If the frost build up is on the back panel of the freezer then it has a defrost problem which causes a no cool situation. Let me know more about this frost buildup and what you have done.
SOURCE: Everything freezes in the refrigerator
Your damper that controls the air to the fridge side is stuck open. It can be caused by moisture getting on it and freezing it so it wont close or by a failure in the electrical circuit that controls it. There was a service bulletin from about 3-4 years ago about defective control assemblys. I have replaced several and as far as I know Frigidaire is still replacing some of them for free if they fall under the model and serial numbers that were affected.
You can tell if it is frozen by turning the controls off and thawing the damper at the upper left rear of the fridge section with a hair dryer.. After you have it thawed out, turn the controls back on and you should hear the damper door motor running. Keep your thermometer in it and check it after a while and see if it shuts off before it freezes.
Post back with the complete model and serial numbers and I will try to locate the service bulletin at my shop computer tomorrow.

sometimes when the cooler weather comes in you may need to chnge temp setings to a warmer setting to prevent some items from freezing ie: leafy vegetables, water bottles, eggs, etc etc.
now if you are having total freeze up of everything in the ref section then you could have bad temp control or damper assy.
SOURCE: Ice Maker does not open rubber flap in door to let ice out........
I have a Frigidaire Gallerie side by side with Ice and water through the door. I am getting no water to the ice maker or water dispenser. I have checked and water is getting to the bottom of the fridge through the copper line but is not going through the lines to the Ice maker or door.
