HP Pavilion dv6337us screen problem

The left side of my screen suddenly turned black and the Start Button jumped from the bottom of the right screen to the top. The black space is about one inch into the screen and can be pulled out to the half-way mark. The black area show some icons and functions like the date and time and what program is open and running as well as a desktop icon. I cannot get this strip to go away. Any help would be really appreciated. --Lisa

    Hi, Ron:

Thanks for the advice, but I tried that before and nothing happens. Usually one can grab the startbutton to reposition it, but in this case nothing happens regardless of where I click and hold on the black strip that takes of the first inch or so of the left side of my screen. It looks like a toolbar that should be hidden along the bottom of the screen but is now black and on the left blocking full viewing. When I minimize a window, it used to shoot to the bottom bar, now it goes over to the left black area underneath the StartButton which is on the far left in the black area as well. Thanks so much for the advice though. If you think of anything let me know. I tried the HP site and got nowhere.

    Thanks again, Ron!

I am running Windows Vista Business. I am really terrible with computers but I think you are correct in assuming this is a Windows problem because the computer works fine otherwise. I right-clicked the black strip and it did show me the Toolbars box; so I assume the vertical black strip is acting like a toolbar. However, Lock the Taskbar was not checked.

I don't know how to re-fresh Window and I haven't made my back up disks yet as the computer is only a few months old. I bought it on-line through Circuit City. It's probably under some sort of warranty but being the do-do bird that I am about this stuff I really don't know.

THANKS!! I really appreciate your hints! Lisa

    Hey, Ron!

I really thought you had the solution with setting the start date back in time! I got all excited because I did that once on my older Pavilion that runs XP and it worked perfectly. Well, on this Vista Business what happened is that it only allowed me to create an "original" start date as I had never gone in and manually set a date before and the dagnabbed thing did not set a date itself. Naturally, it simply set yesterday as the original date. In fact on Vista Business there is not even a small numerical calendar of any sort that would allow for going back in time. Rather there is this dialogue box that walks you through how to set an initial recovery date for the computer. So, I'm still in Black Strip Land. You know, I'm actually getting used to it! Thanks again for trying!! You're the best. Lisa

Place you cursor on a blank spot on the black area, Hold the left mouse/touchpad button down and drag it back down to the bottom of the screen. That should get you back to where you want things to be.
If that fixes it, please return here to rank this as solved. If it doesn't, let me know and we'll see what else we can come up with. ;o)

Well, isn't that a stumper! It acts just like the start toolbar, but it's black and you can't move it. I'm sure that reloading the OS with recovery CD's would fix it, but that can be a real pain, huh? Let me puzzle on this a bit and see what/if I can come up with something.

Quick question-What flavor of OS are we running? XP? XP pro?

  • Anonymous Nov 10, 2007

    Additional thoughts.
Try to right click on the black area and see if "Lock the taskbar" is checked. If so, uncheck it and see if this will allow it to be moved. This is a windows problem, not an HP problem. Do you have anyway of doing a refresh of windows rather than a reload? That should get things back to normal without messing with the other
programs and data that you have on the disk.

I'm not really familiar with that particular laptop. Are you running XP? If so, you should have restore points. In other words, you can go back and reset your computer to an earlier date. Like the day before this started happening? The downside is that you'll loose anything that you have put in since that date. But in your case, you could go in and backup any of the newer data and reload that after going to the restore point.
If this is the case, let me know and I think that I can walk you thru it.

If you want to try to do this type of restore-
Remember, back up any word, excel or other files that you might want to save, first!!
Click on "Start", point to "All programs", point to "Accessories", point to "System tools" and then click on "System restore". That will bring up a screen that has 2 options. The first one is "Restore my computer to an earlier time". That's the one that you want.
Then just follow on thru the instructions.

I have a HP pavilion laptop and cannot locate the FN plus button or the on/off switch to turn the wireless on / off.

This would be located on the front left, right below the mouse pad next to the left corner. Its usually a black switch that you could turn left for off, and right for on. when on it should show a blue light, and when off yellow...

Black Bars each side of my new monitor wide screen

Right Click on an open spot on your desktop.

If your Operating System is Windows XP, choose Properties from the menu box that pops up when you right click.

A new window will open up. Click the Settings tab at the top right.
On this menu you should see a slider bar near the bottom left under "Screen Resolution". Left Click and hold the mouse button on the grey button and move it on the slider bar over to the right one spot. Then click the Apply button on the bottom right of the box. The screen may flicker for a second and your desktop will change size. If the screen covers the whole monitor and the black bars are gone, that may be the correct resolution. Click OK on the box that has a timer and is asking if you want to keep the screen that size. If the screen does not look correct, click No and you may need to slide the button one more spot over and try the next resolution and Apply until it looks correct.

Under the slider bar as you move it over a line at a time will be 2 numbers like this 1024 X 800, and when you move the bar over the numbers will change. I believe the optimal resolution setting numbers for the 20" monitor you have should be 1680 X 1050 for the widescreen. You may want to try that setting. If it looks too small, try sliding the bar to the left and try each resolution setting.

Here's a screetshot of what the Box with the slider bar looks like:

If you have Windows Vista, (it is similiar to XP):

Click the Start Button and click Control Panel in the Start Menu
Click Appearance and Personalization in the new window that opens up.
Click Personalization, then click Display Settings at the bottom
A new box will pop up with the grey button on a slider bar near the bottom left under "Resolution" Slide the button to the right to the next line one spot over on the slider bar and then click the Apply button. The screen may flicker and change the size of your desktop. Click OK if the screen looks correct or click No if it doesn't look correct and try sliding the button over one more line.

Screen Adjustment

On your monitor at the bottom there is 3 buttons. The one all the way to the left is the "menu" button. The next one (going right) is the "NEGATIVE" button. The next one (going right) is the "POSITIVE" button.

You can move your screen around. First, start by pressing the menu button. Then, a menu in blue, with a bunch of little white icons will appear. Next, go over two icons by pressing the positive button twice. Then, proceed to push in the "menu" button again. A bar will appear. By pressing your negative button, your screen will move left. Pressing your positive button will make your screen move right. Adjust your screen until the black on both sides are of even proportion. Then, press the menu button to return to the orginal menu you started at. Proceed to press your positive button two more times. Then, press your menu button. Then, once again, use your positive button, and your negative button to adjust your screen to even out the black on the top and bottom.
