Were you able to fix it? I took out the fan and cleaned it with a toothbrush (didn't disassemble it). If it worked, can you provide some insight into what you did?

SOURCE: lenovo thinkpad R61 audio driver not working

There are audio drives for this laptop, they will work for Windows, XP, Vista, & Windows 2000. They are on this site:

Just install and the laptop should recognize them. It if doesn't then that means the onboard video is bad.

The same model ThinkPadcan have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless youknow exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download allthe drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver. When you download thedrivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a recordof which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files arelocated on your hard drive.
