I have the same latern. Apply a bit more force to rotate the bottom lid in a counter-clockwise direction. There are threads on the inside of the botton lid. To replace the battery or bulb you go through the botton of the lattern.
You can't change the bulb. I just tried. To get to the bulb, take out the batteries (the cover on the bottom can be tight and hard to twist off). Then it you look really carefully you can see screwed deep in some wells on the sided. You remove those two screws with a long Phillips screwdriver. Then you can remove the base part and the bulb. You then remove the bulb housing by removing the two screws on it. When you that you discover that there is a circuit board with wires that are welded to the battery compartment. Next you carefully bend the plastic holding the circuit board and it comes out allowing you access to the bulb itself. Now you discover that the bulb has wires soldered (or welded or something) to it that are soldered to the circuit board. Basically, you can't change it.
I gave up. I will never buy that lantern again.
Sorry Charlie. I followed your instructions up through removing the 2 deep-well screws. the internal assy came out with ease and the bulb is plugged into a 4-prong plug on top. The bulb came out easily and now I have to find the replacement bulb. As far as the bottom removal goes, I used a large slip-joint pliers to get it broke loose. I remembered how long this light has been on board my fishing boat through many winters and summers. I most certainly would buy another when this one fails.
