Piston no.1 on top dead centre and rotar pointing to no.1 plug lead engine must be on compression stroke,timing marks on front pulley.

What is the firing order on my 2002 Mazda B3000 DS ? And how do the numbers go on my distributor?


Which engine do you have in the vehicle? They fitted them with an in-line four cylinder and a V6. The firing orders are different for each version. I'm assuming the distributor has NOT been removed and is set correctly!
**Note, Take your time to make sure you get this right!**
The Four cylinder is the standard 1,3,4,2, firing order with number One being the nearest cylinder, (spark plug), to the belts and pulleys on the engine. Use the plug leads as a guide as they should be four different lengths. The longest plug lead to the spark plug furthest away, shortest to the nearest spark plug.
With the distributor cap removed make sure the engine is at Top Dead Centre for cylinder One. Check where the metal tip on the rotor arm is pointing as this is where the plug lead for Number One should go.
Refit the the distributor cap and insert the lead for the Number One spark plug into the hole nearest where the rotor arm tip was pointing. Now refit the remaining 3 plug leads in the Correct Order, (1,3,4,2,) into the remaining 3 outside holes in a CLOCKWISE direction. The centre hole should connect to the coil pack lead.
A V6 engine uses the same setup BUT a different firing order. (See photo). 1,4,2,5,3,6. In the photo numbers 1 and 4 are nearest the belts and pulleys.
Set your distributor as you would for the four cylinder engine, fit plug lead one and going CLOCKWISE fit them as the 1,4,2,5,3,6 sequence.

The order is 1,3,4,2 but distributor has no numbers.help me with diagram.it is a 1996 model Toyota hilux champion gear.


Turn the engine clock wise until top dead centre look at where the rotor arm is pointing that will be either 1 or 4 the rotor should turn the same way u can work out from there

Firing order


Those numbers on the cap identify which cylinder is connected to which plug wire and in some cases its also the firing order. Usually the firing order is stamped into the top of the intake manifold someplace. You also need to know which direction the rotor is turning in to make sure you get the correct order. Leave the cap off and bump the started to see which direction the rotor turns in and you can work out the firing order from that.

Ignition timing


remove no 1parp plug and with you finger over the hole turn until you feel pressure under your finger. Watch the timing mark on the harmonic balancer pulley and when it gets to about 10 degrees before the TDC mark then the piston is set to fire . Now position the rotor button facing no 1 plug lead in the cap and put the distributor in the hole . IT may turn the button off position so pull it back out a bit and turn the button off a bit until it lines up with no1 lead when fitted Tighten up the clamp a bit so that you can just turn the body of the distributor . fit all the leads including the coil wire and module wires. Use a timing light and adjust while the engine is idling

I have a 1988 ford F150 4.9L VIN code (Y) .I had a bad head gasket and a bad head so i replaced both of them. Now that everything is back together i can get the engine to crank but not fire over.


I would suggest that you have incorrectly timed the engine.The proper way is to set number one cylinder to top dead centre on the compression stroke, if you look at the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine you should see a groove that marked top dead centre.With the engine at set at top dead centre take the distributed out of its mounting.
with the cap removed, you should find a small market on the top face of the distributor body.
This might only be a small mark but it is on the flange where the cap normally sits.
When you insert the distributor the mark on that distributor casing should line up with the distributor rotor button. You may have to remove the distributor slightly so that you can line up the rotor a button.
You may in fact have to do this two or three times until you get the marks lined up.
Then check the firing order of your engine, this is normally marked somewhere on the engine.
Once you have done this you should find the engine will start, you may have to adjust the advance on the distrubor to 4 to 12 degrees before TDC with a timing light.

Hi i have a problem with retiming my ignition system as i cannot find any timing marks on the distribution pickup


probably electronically controlled no timing marks usually indicates that the timing is controlled electronically and the only way to adjust is using a scan tool.

The firing order is; 1-3-4-2 and the rotor moves in a counterclockwise direction. Turn the crank shaft and set the engine at TDC (top dead centre). This ill set the rotor arm pointing at No1 cylinder. From this point you can replace the HT leads in the above order.

What you need to do is...

1, Find TDC (top dead centre) for cylinder number 1. Easiest way to do this is to get the car on level ground, put it in 5th gear, handbrake off and pull / rock the car forwards. You are looking to line up the timing dot on the crank pulley to the notch on the cover. At the same time observe which direction the rotor arm turns as well i.e. clock or anti-clock wise.

2, Once you have found TDC, look to where the rotor arm is pointing and that will be towards plug number ones lead position.

3, Now assuming the firing order is 1-3-4-2 and #1 cylinder is at the opposite end to the gearbox, you should be able to work out what goes where.

4, Look at the rotor arm position as you have set up the timing, fit the cap then fit the lead to #1 cylinder. Fit the other leads as above.
