Occurs only when not used for 2 or more days and stops a few seconds after water runs. A new installation 3 years ago & includes Rough Valve with Diverter, Valve Trim, hand shower, and tub spout. NO rust from any other faucet, shower head, or toilet in the house including those which run from same supply line, so not the pipes or water supply.
When you turn off faucets other than your tub or shower you will note that the water stops fairly abruptly. Not so with a shower head or tub spout. Some water always dribbles out even after you have turned it off. This small amount of water then evaporates leaving behind the iron that was dissolved in your water. This also happens if any faucet has a slow drip. There are products that will easily remove the rust stains. CLR, Iron Out, or Iron Ike are all good products that will remove the stain. Available at hardware stores, plumbing supply houses, and, ugh, Home Depot or Lowes. Please support your local business owners by purchasing there.

SOURCE: Water runs out out both places for spout and shower head in tub!!
One of two issues. Either the shower valve was installed upside down or there is a twin ell ( Old School Diverter) Partially plugged. Odds are the valve is upside down.
Good Luck, Phil

SOURCE: Bath tub faucet will only run hot. Just started
It sounds like the seals are going bad. Moen is probably rebuildable. You can go to a Menards and ask if they have the replacement guts for your particular model.

SOURCE: single handle tub faucet will not divert to shower
the diverter on the tub spout is bad you need to replace the tub spout or the pull up diverter if its a separate piece if you have the owners manual with a parts diagram you can order it on line from the manufacturer or a plumbing supply store. you will need to unscrew the tub spoup from the wall to do this use a broom handle or something similar inserted inside the spout and turn it to the left to remove it from the wall
