The camera is a SX20IS. I have tried to hit the DISP button but nothing happens. I can view pictures that were taken with the LCD screen

Most DSLR cameras (like your Canon) don't have a live view - in other words, you can't "see" the image before you capture it. You must use the viewfinder.

It may be fixable, but it may be expensive. You also have the option to upgrade your camera through Canon's Loyalty program. I'd give them a call and find out what your options are before going out and purchasing a new camera.

Has the screen been cracked/damaged? Was your camera dropped in any liquid? It's worth it to try having the LCD screen replaced, as it's quite affordable. If there is liquid damage near the LCD input inside the camera that would be another issue that would be solved by replacing those main boards.
In an ideal situation it would be just that the backlight cable wiggled itself out of its input (I'm assuming the screen doesn't light up anymore), which is something you could look at yourself if you're comfortable taking your camera apart. I wish you luck =)
