I have no sound coming from my speakers at all. I tried changing the input from CD/Phono/etc. but nothing produces sound. The fuses are not blown, and the speakers are not shorting. How would I fix this?

I have experienced a similar problem with my Sony STR-GX57ES and took it to a certified tech only to find it needed the power supply replaced. I opted to hunt down a compatible power supply but have been unsucessful thus far. That being said I picked up an STR-D665 for next to nothing and found the power supplies to be quite different (you would hope so any, with the ES meaning Elivated Standard and all) but with the D665 working flawlessly I'd rather have something working than nothing. I am posting this to try and get everyones audio problem for this receiver fixed. If you only connected the HDMI cable to the 510, you will not get sound. This receiver passes through HDMI only, no processing of audio. You must either connect a fiber optic or digital coax to the 510 for that respective HDMI input from the BD player, the DVD HDMI only accepts digital coax, and the Video2 HDMI only accepts fiber optic. If you BD player does not have digital coax out for audio, you must move the connection to Video2 HDMI and connect fiber optic to the Video2 fiber input. Sony butchered the whole purpose of HDMI with this receiver. Hope this heps you. By the way, it is hardware, no firmware update will correct this.

I dont have the exact model you do, but on my sony receiver I have to enter the setup menu and define where the input is for the device I am using. For example I have to tell the receiver to use the optical audio input instead of the RCA Stereo. Otherwise its on default.
Also, you do know this model of reciever offers only pass-through audio on HDMI? that means no surround sound!!! Thats really silly but thats the specs for this model. To get surround you'll have to use optical. otherwise , with HDMI through this sony you are adding an extra component to tyour system with no benefit other than maybe power amplification.

This unit is having a problem with the preamplifier and power amplifier section. The reason to suspect this is that you can still hear sound, this is not likely if you ahd a failure in the power supply section. The unit may have had a failure in the amplifier areas of these sections, These are the signal amplifier sections that increase the power of the signal to drive the sound in the speakers .The Unit is probably in the protection mode reducing all power to prevent further damage to the rest of the receiver. You can go to the www.sony.com website support section and look in the frequently asked question and troubleshooting sections for problems like yours and see if they have any answers. On this website you can also find customer support. Ask them questions about the problem and see if they have any solutions.If all this fails to answer you problem, you can try opening the unit and looking for the problem yourself. Only work on the unit with it unpluged from the power source. Take off the top cover and look for any damaged areas, on the pc boards.They would be brown areas from excessive heat due to component overheating and possible failure.Look for capacitors that may have gone bad, they will be bulging from the top and bottom and may be leaking material from inside of them. Any component like this needs to be replaced. You may find burnt resistors and other failed components that will require a digital voltmeter to test.If you have expperience with this type of repair you might be able to isolate the problem and replace the parts. This may require the help of service information due to the complexity of the receiver's operations. Try to get a schematic or service manual from the web or a repair shop. This will have all the parts and a diagram of the all the different sections of the receiver. Usuall there is a power supply section, a tuner section, a preamplifier section, and a amplifier section. There also could be a equalizer section and other sections according the functions of the receiver. The failure most likely has occured in the preamplifier section or amplifier section. The problem in the preamplifier section could be a signal diode failure or a signal amplifier failure. in the amplifier section the problem could be in the output power devices which may be transistors or ic's depending on the type of output amplifier use in the unit. Usually not that hard to find with good service information and test eauipment.You may want to take this to a school that teaches electronic servicing and see if they will work on the unit for you for the cost of parts and a small labor fee. Call them first and see if they can help you out. I hope this helps you with your problem.

just repaired my se 501 poor solder conections on blue rleays by speaker jacks,also blown center speaker seems there are 2 in it one blew and so did cpacitor running now just hooked up one in center speaker sonds great also stay at 8 ohms setting
"PHONO" is the only designated connection on a receiver that is literal and exclusive. Nothing but PHONO will work right on it and old-school turntables would require it to preamplify the tiny current produced by a Phono cartridge.
BUT, modern turntables like your come with their own preamplifiers, so they MUST be connected to a garden variety Line Level input like AUX (anything BUT Phono or it will overload).

As far as WHY your amplifier isn't making da music, that could be whole 'nother problem.
