  1. 1Rinse the rice under cool water. Place the brown rice in a fine mesh strainer and quickly rinse it under cold running water for about 30 seconds.
    • Make sure that the strainer is made from very fine mesh. If the gaps between the wires are too large, you could end up losing an unfortunate amount of rice as you rinse it.
    • Note that you may not always need to rinse the rice, and this is somewhat of an outdated practice. Rinsing is a cleaning process and is a necessary step if you suspect that the rice has been imported or handled roughly in bulk storage. If the rice is a fortified, domestic product, however, you probably will not need to worry about rinsing it.[1]
  2. 2Soak the rice for 45 minutes in hot water.[2] Transfer the brown rice to your rice cooker and add 3 cups of water to the basin, as well.[3] Let it soak and soften for at least 45 minutes.
    • You can soak the rice up to 3 hours, if desired, but 45 minutes will often be enough.
    • If you prefer a more flavorful rice, you could substitute some or all of the water with chicken broth or vegetable broth. Substitute the broth in equal amounts for the water.
    • Soaking is beneficial because it reduces the stickiness of the rice. It also helps the rice expand into long, thin grains.
  3. 3Add salt, if desired. Sprinkle the soaked rice with salt, if desired, to draw out more flavor from the rice as it cooks.
    • Give the contents of the rice cooker a quick stir with a wooden mixing spoon to distribute the salt more evenly.
  4. 4Turn the rice cooker on and set the timer. If your rice cooker has a brown rice setting, use that. If it only has a timer, set the timer for 30 minutes.
    • The rice cooker must remain covered for the duration of the cooking process.
    • Check the rice after the first 30 minutes. If the grains still seem tough and the content of the basin are still somewhat soupy, cover and set the timer for another 10 minutes.
    • Understand that each rice cooker varies by make and model. In order to cook the rice as best as possible, you need to read the instructions that come with your rice cooker and set the timer and other settings according to what you read there.
  5. 5Let the rice stand. After the timer goes off, let the rice stand for another 5 to 10 minutes so that it absorbs any remaining water in the basin.[4]
    • Leave the cover on as the rice continues to sit.
  6. 6Add butter and/or soy sauce, if desired. If you want to flavor the cooked rice, you could add about 2 Tbsp (30 ml) of butter or margarine or 1 Tbsp (15 ml) of soy sauce. Stir well to coat the rice evenly.
    • You could also wait until after you place the rice in serving dishes before seasoning it. That way, everyone can season the rice according to his or her own tastes.
  7. 7Serve hot. Transfer the rice to serving dishes or set it aside for use in other recipes that call for cooked brown rice.

SOURCE: Need directions for Comet stove top rice cooker

Fill the bottom to the line with water. Put two cups of rice in the top and two cups of water. Put on stove top on high until lower water is boiling, turn to medium heat. For white rice check after about 20 minutes, if water is assorbed and rice is tender, fluff with a fork...eat. If it needs a few more minutes of cooking, no problem.
Brown rice will take about 45 minutes.
I have used my stove top cooker for at least 35 years...ordered it with box top and some money from Comet Rice.

SOURCE: rice cooker vs a crocpot/slow cooker

I have both and use both for different things. The rice cooker cooks faster than the slow cooker. What the Crockpot does really well, the rice cooker cannot do. For example, with the crock pot, you can buy less expensive cuts of meat and because of the slow cook method, they will be tender, juicy, and delicious. You can make soups, stews and casseroles in a crock pot and the great thing is that you can turn it on low, go to work, and when you come home, dinner is done. You can cook the same types of things in a rice cooker but you can't leave it all day. You CAN saute', fry, etc,. in your rice cooker which you can't do in a crock pot but for dense veggies and tougher cuts of meat, stew beef for example, there's no comparison. I have an Oster Rice Cooker and Steamer which I use nearly every day. I cook rice, obviously, casseroles, veggies, spaghetti and meatballs, all kinds of side dishes and soups in it. I use the crockpot several times a week but more often in the Fall and Winter when I make soups, stews, chilis, roasts and BBQ. Oh my gosh, you have to try BBQ Ribs in the crock pot! They melt in your mouth. Go to Yahoo! Groups. You'll find all kinds of great info for both your rice cooker and crock pot. I have one of the fancier, more expensive crock pots because I take it to work with me one day a week for lunch. The lid seals and it comes with a carrier. If you do most of your cooking at home, you can spend a little less and get a good one. I recommend getting one that has at least 3 heat settings though. Different foods require different temps. Happy Cooking!

My rice cooker not cook rice properly leave some waterand un cook rice. What shuld I do steamer is working good.

Are you maybe putting too much water in. usual amount is equal parts water to rice. Except for brown where you need an extra half cup water to each cup of brown rice. Remove the steamer tray, of course when cooking rice.

How much brown rice to water? Thanks, OLinda

Add a little more water to brown rice than you would white. Rice cookers do not make a very good job of cooking brown rice and it often sticks to the base. Better to use only white rice in cookers

How do I cook brown rice in the rice cooker?

I tried it once and it wasn't easy. It appears that the automatic rice makers are calibrated for whit rice. Anyway, I had to add about twice as much water as white rice takes and restarted the cooker once or twice until it was done. It was a failure and I never attempted to cook brown rice in it again.
There may be rice cookers that have a setting and instructions for brown rice, but I've never seen one.
Good luck.

Rice cooker spits rice juice all over counter

I had the same problem when I cooked brown rice in my rice cooker! I found that adding a tablespoon of butter on top of the cooking rice solves the problem. (A friend told me it works when cooking beans in a pot, so I figured it would help with rice too, and it did!)
