The vent fan comes on if your steaming or creating heat unit it to protect the control unit. So I assume this was happening when the fan came on? I hope this answers your question. When this happens the unit will turn off when it cools down all by itself.

Why does my convection microwave ovens fan keep running long after it has finished cooking

There are 2 reasons :
01.Because the high temp. used to cooking must chill down.
02.To exhaust the remains of steam that could lead to premature rust of the oven

Its runs but no heat.

It is usually the magnetron tube that fails which then blows an inner-cabinet fuse. The world seems full of bad Asian made magnetrons that fail prematurely due to air infiltrated internal vacuums from leaking metal to glass seals. It will probably cost more in parts and labor to repair than a new unit. A well made magnetron should gradually lose output power over time (years), not just quit. Hope this helps!

Microhood combo magnetron failure

If this is an over the range microwave that vents outside rather than recirculates the air back into the kitchen, make sure the magnetron cooling section of the blower was realigned to direst air downward over the magnetron. If the unit has a seperate internal cooling fan, make sure it is functioning. These checks need to be made by a qualified service technician only.
If it's a counter top unit, just make sure the internal cooling fan is functioning.

Unit is new, but has damage to one side of cabinet. IT TURNS ON OK, but seems to run very hot(especially on top)& is noisey!

I would return it to the dealer or arrange for repair.

There may be hidden damage inside that can result in microwave leakage, fire hazard, or premature failure.

Also, the physical damage will render your warranty void unless it was damaged before you received / installed it.

Auto-fan turns on too often.

Normally the exhaust / vent / hood fan will come on automatically if the stove top or the bottom plate of the microwave gets too hot.

Also, there may be some settings for the auto-fan that can work like this.

Consult your manual. If you don't have it, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Otherwise, the hood fan thermostat may be failing. It should be normally open when you do a continuity check.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

We even have a video on our site that shows you how to safely & easily remove the control panel assembly in less than 5 minutes so you can check out your oven.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I have an LG LMVH1750ST microwave convection oven. When I activate the fan for cooking purposes and then try to turn off, it does not respond. I have to pull electrical plug and reprogram for one minute....

From the owner's manual under OPERATION "VENT FAN":

"If the temperature from the range or cooktop below the oven gets too hot, the vent fan in the vent hood will automatically turn on at the 4-Speed setting to protect the oven. When this occurs, the VENT ON/OFF pad will not turn the fan off."

You should check your "vent fan auto time set" setting.

Here's one thing to try to set it to turn off after 10 minutes:

Touch the Vent ON/OFF pad, then touch the "5-SPEED VENT" pad until "level 4" appears in the display, then touch "AUTO TIME SET" the desired number of times.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Vent fan will not stop running - Auto fan will not shut off even when there is no heat on and everything is cool.

the thermal switch button is bad ,stuck on
its normally located in the back around the fan or klystron tube
it has 2 connectors and looks like a large button.

Are any other bulbs in the home going out prematurely? If so, I would check the actual voltage of your power outlets. If not, the bulbs may be getting grease or debris on them from stovetop cooking. This can cause hot psots and premature failure. I recommend wiping them clean with alcohol on a cloth before installing them. I recommend that folks always have their hood fan on when cooking on the stovetop. Also, you might check with a local home center (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) to see if they have some high-quality (non-Chinese) substitutes.
