My Canon Powershot Elph about 50% of the time powers on, and the screen works for me to view pictures previously taken, but on the setting to take pictures the screen is black.
About a quarter of the time I can get it to work again by doing the reset procses, and about a quarter of the time it works if I take out the battery and blow into the camera (the old Nintendo trick), but about half the time I can't use it for a few hours.
Does anyone know a permanent fix for this, or even a more reliable temporary fix?
Thank you!

I have been happy with my Canon PowerShot SD700 IS since buying it in May 2006. I NEVER dropped it, I NEVER took it out in the rain, I keep it in a case and always strung around my neck and shoulder. I have taken loads of photos. I love this camera, but suddenly a big problem started two weeks ago. I noticed the pictures were a bit over exposed so would point at a darker part of the landscape to autofocus and then move camera to take the picture. Later the same day, I started getting blank screens (same as discribed by EWHeatly). I could get the camera working again by fiddling with the DISP button, turning on and off, etc. By the next day, that didn't work any more. I'd nearly given the camera up as dead until I read the EWheatly's comments and decided to try "reset". Well that didn't work. But then I tried using STITCH mode and started to see a picture!! The first photo is blank/black, the second in the STITCH series is a real picture but the color is off (overexposed) and then the 3rd in the series is perfect!!!! After that I switch to taking regular pictures and everything works beautiflully again!! That is, until I turn off the camera. When I turn it back on, I have to go through the whole STITCH thing again (1st picture blank, 2nd weird, 3rd perfect). I'm not sure how long this STITCH fix will work. Is this also a ccd problem? If so, does my camera still qualify for exchange if I bought it in 2006? What should I do?
