Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

SOURCE: grinding noise
The Neptune bearings are an interesting breed... Maytag wants you to replace the whole outer tub which includes the bearings installed for $180 or so. You can replace the bearings yourself. See www.tonytool.com to see how it is done. The tool costs $379 or so... but it is designed for the service tech. not the d.i.y.er. But watching the video can give you an idea of how to do it yourself. The bearings were available on www.neptunewaxmotor.com for about $35.00. You will also need the Maytag seal kit 12002022 to complete the job whether you decide to replace bearings or the outer tub.

Continuous Unbalanced Circuit.
Improper signal from Tub
Wet Clothes • Very small clothes loads can cause unbalanced loads - add additional towels. • Excessive suds may have been present. • Check Tub Displacement Sensor connection and main harness connector at machine control board. • Check Tub Displacement Sensor for 0 to 3.0 Volts DC output voltage between ground and the board input. Check for 12 Volts DC input voltage between the ground and the board output. Only check for voltage at the Tub Displacement Sensor. Do not perform a continuity check. See Tub Displacement Diagnostics • Excessive motion was detected in spin Run Quick Spin Test with an empty tub to check Tub Displacement Sensor and machine control board. • Check for restricted drain system.

I would not rush out and buy a Motor Controller just yet. I can’t see any technical reason that would link the Motor Controller to dc/UC error codes related to unbalance condition you experiencing but I could be out in left field. Can you elaborate on your clutch work? New clutch assembly installed ie new clutch pulley, what I call the Spinner Shaft coupler as seen in my clutch repair/replacement post. Did you replace the upper oneway roller clutch bearing if used and the clutch pulley mounted oneway roller clutch bearing? I assume the wash tub is banging around before throwing the UC or dc error can you let me know If you are not throwing dc/UC errors associated with large tub swings? Could you lift the top of the washer and with an empty wash basket start a Spin Only cycle and watch the tumblers closely at the start of the spin cycle. The tumblers should rotate a very small amount as the large wrap spring comes under tension in the clutch pulley with the CCW spin rotation of the wash basket. Those tumblers should not rotate more than 1/8 of a turn as the wash basket starts the spin cycle with CCW rotation. Can you verify the tumbler rotation action for me as spin cycle starts?
Did you check the Tub Displacement Sensor? It’s in the Service Manual. If you haven’t can you give this a quick check?
3.0 Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check.
It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM.
3a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”
3b. Press the Super Wash key display reads “in”…something like that.
3c. Press Delicates the Display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).
3d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).
3e. Press Hand Wash.
3f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). If you get these results your Tub Displacement sensor should be OK and I believe it’s not the component failure producing dc/UC errors in spin cycle. I would remove the clutch for inspection and re-lube. There is a more technical troubleshooting method to check Tub Displacement Sensor in the Troubleshooting guide and Service manual.
Let me know if I can help. Rich

Hello mjloomis, See this post for my Clutch Maintenance/Repair DIY step by step process. I always suggest the TDS check before you drop the clutch out. The grinding noise may be coins or some other debris under the tumblers. The tumblers can be removed just follow the Service Manual for the FAV6800A/FAV9800A. The SM fails to mention the Torx driver size to remove the tumblers it is a #20 Torx bit/driver. I would start there, then the TDS check almost all the time the dC/uC unbalance errors are caused by the One-Way Roller clutches slipping in spin cycle causing the tumbler movement during wash basket spin up which causes the dC/uC error to shut down your machine?..that also tells me the TDS is OK other wise your machine would shake itself apart. Still recommend the TDS check good practice getting to Service Mode. I recommend a replacement clutch thai I use in my machines. You may get away for a while with a clutch clean up. When I get home this evening I have some additional info regarding testing the One-Way roller clutches for slippage. Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check. It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM. a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads ?00? b. Press the Super Wash key display reads ?in??something like that. c. Press Delicates the Display will show ?UC? (Unbalance Closed). d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to ?UO? (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show ?UC? (Unbalance Closed). e. Press Hand Wash. f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to ?UO? (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show ?UC? (Unbalance Closed). You can power down the machine and remove the 3 #15 torx sheet metal screws from the back of the console and pull the Troubleshooting guide out if a Friendly Maytag Repair man has not removed. It has the wiring schematic which is handy. I have PDF schematics if you need. You can drain the excess water out of the wash tub in Service Mode; Process slightly modified from the SM; Enter Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads ?00? Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key. Post back if you have questions, I help you thru the DIY fix if you want to save some $$$....Rich

Thank you for posying your model number.
I believe you may have debris under the tumblers maybe pocket change. Removing tumblers is a fairly easy job. I would start there and see what you find. A number of forum members have had this issue.
The Service manual has the procedure for tumbler removal starting on page 3. It’s not difficult to remove them the manual doesn’t call out the Torx driver size required for tumbler removal. You will need a number 20 Torx driver to remove the screw for tumbler removal.
The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference
I have a procedure for clutch maintenance/repair for the FAV6800A/FAV9800A. I have helped a number of owners with the process. The other high failure item is the Left Hand Lid Lock causing OP,OD,FL errors. I or someone on the forum will help with other issues.
Post back if you have questions….Rich

Tips for a great answer:
In the Sticky: Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW 5 post down you will find a link to the Service Manual. You absolutely need the Service Manual to DIY issues with the machine. It's not the best SM but will get you started. I also have repair post in that sticky to help with the most common issues that I have helped owners with. I'm an owner of a FAV6800AWW top load machine.
