Tascam tutorial why does the unit freeze up intermittently, usually after attempting to "premaster"? no buttons work, unit is on. shutdown, restart, no help. wait a few minutes, unfreezes and go again. Then freezes up again. help?

Normal restart: select restart from the apple menu, or press the power key (the sleep/restart/shutdown dialog appears), then click the restart button or press the "r" key.
Forced restart (use only if the computer crashes or freezes): Press simultaneously the Apple, Control and power keys.
Forced shutdown (use only if the computer won't respond to anything, not even a forced restart): Press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

Most common intermittents are from low freon.

It sounds like the hard drive has failed... cheap test, get another and reformat the new one. They are so inexpensive now. To avoid losing data, they lock things up if anything goes wrong. The unit probably can't get the ready signal from the drive and freezes...

Chapter 7, page 45 talks about erasing partitions permanently.

while the machine is off mode, hold down track edit and shutdown buttons. then power on while holding these buttons. an option to to reset will come up, let go of the buttons and select "yes".
This will reformat your entire hard drive, and you will lose any music you were working on, but it becomes operational again. Or you can send it in to Tascam and let them try to bring it back, if you don't want to lose any material.

I have a Tascam CD-1u Professional that load's the CD and say nodisc once it is done loading. this unit dosen't seem to be reading the CD what is the problem

it needs a power supply.

You have to choose your out point before entering premaster mode.

Use the transport keys to get to the point you want to end your mix and press 'shift' and 'set out' (mkI). For the mkII the end point is set by pressing the 'locate' key and the 'out' key.

Usually an indication of bad sectors on the hard drive. This can be caused by bumping the unit when it is running, excessive vibration, a power failure while it is on, improper shutdown, or expoure to a strong magnetic field like having a subwoofer too close or an intermittent faulty power supply.

Your options are to return the unit (if it is still under warranty), or if not to open up the DP-01, remove the hard drive, connect it to a PC and perform a low level format (or take the drive to your nearest PC repair shop and have them reformat it).

Unfortunately you'll lose any data that wasn't backed up, but this should bring back your DP-01.

This answer assumes you have the 2488 mkI and not the newer mkII because the process may differ slightly on the mkII.

To premaster you first have to set an out point for the end of your pre-master (the start point is always zero). Go to the 'Audio CD' menu item and choose 'pre-master' under that. You'll see the word 'mastering' appear in the top left of the screen to let you know you've entered mastering mode. Make sure you have the tracks unmuted that you want to mix into the pre-master and have all of your eq, panning, etc set the way you want. Then hit record and play. The pre-master records to a stereo pair of dedicated internal tracks. You can redo the premaster as many times as you like which will overwrite those internal premaster tracks. You can clone the premastered tracks to a stereo pair of tracks, export them as waves or burn them to a CDR.
