Paper transport does not work; terrible grinding noise
Hi, recently my Dell 3000cn printer suddenly stopped picking up paper to run through the printing mechanism. Instead it makes a very loud grinding noise and gives a paper jam error message, telling me to open the Reg cover (inner rear cover). The first time this happened there was a jam, but after removing the jammed paper I kept getting the same grinding noise and no activity in the paper tray. After a few hours on the phone with Dell tech support, they told me to replace the "vertical transport assembly," which I did, to no avail (same grinding noise, still no paper being picked up from the tray). What could this be?
Re: paper transport does not work; terrible grinding...
I took mine apart from the back and put it back together and it worked. It is probably due to moving it and the bottom paper tray alignment gets out of whack. I inspected all of the gear train and didn't find any worn or missing teeth. I suspect a paper jam started it and the user turned the printer around to open the back door. Since the handles are on the printer the tray doesn't move with it which allows it to separate and possibly jam a pickup drive gear.

does that message appears in the printer on the PC? if its in the pc, try reinstalling the printer... firts uninstall it from control panel>printer and faxes, and delete it by clicking it and pressing delete.. after you see the icon does not appear anymore, reboot.. then reinstall everything back again, and when you reinstall everything, make sure everything is well connected, and the printer on....
From your description there are two issues, the first is the papers in the tray are not been picked up, second! it is very noisy when attempting a print job. The gears are mostly plastic and have worn to the point that papers can no be scooped up, and finally the noise confirms ware and tare on the system. The cost to repair will be high! this is where a personal choice will need to be made weather to fix or replace, if you use it constantly then I would recommend a replacement.
. There are rollers that cling on to the paper and move it through
the machine. When the rollers are worn down they do not grip the paper. For a
short fix you can get something rough like sandpaper, brillo pad, etc, and
gently scratch the rollers to give them some traction. This will temporarily
solve your problem until you can get the rollers replaced.
The root cause of the problem is the Rubber pads of the feed roller in the paper tray become warn and fail to grip the paper the paper feeds a few millimetres and then is let go by the worn roller, the paper path sensors pick this up and then a paper jam is notified.
The only remedy for this problem is to obtain a new feed roller for the paper tray mechanism. Unfortunately dell in the UK do not sell maintenance kits to the public, and therefor ehte only place I found them wa on Ebay in the USA.
The kit in quetsion is the vertical paper feed maintenance kit. it costs around $50 plus shipping.
The only other option is to have a Dell approved service agent replace the rollers for you.
If you hear a grinding or cruching noise when paper is fed, then one of the mini plastic guide rollers had detached itself from its position and wound up in the tape path mechanism (very expensive repair)
