The 6041 isn't an answering machine. It will ring until you answer, an answering machine or voicemail system picks up, or the caller hangs up.
To change the ring count on your answering machine, consult its documentation. If you require further assistance, please add a comment to this question and identify the answering machine or voicemail system.
SOURCE: phone not connecting
I am having the same problem. Had it last year, too but bought new batteries for all the handsets and that fixed the problem. However, this year I can't find the batteries anywhere!

My handset displays CONNECTING...
Move the handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range.
This is what was listed in the Vtech Manual.
What I suggest is not just powering it off, but remove battery and wait a couple of minutes. Put battery back in and try it. The other thing I suggest is a new battery or switching it temporarily with a phone that works, to see if that helps before you buy a new one. If the battery is weak it will have trouble reaching the base.

Does your handset have a PROG button? Press that, then press the VOL+ button until you come to RINGER VOL: OFF. Press SELECT button, then use the ^ (VOL+) key until you get the desired volume level. Press SELECT again, then OFF. You're good to go.
