If it is still under warranty (a year, I think), call up TI Customer Support (1-800-TI-CARES (800-842-2737) or try 972-917-8324). When my calculator broke, they let me send it back for a free replacement.

....The best thing you can do is begin hacking away at different buttons until you figure out what certain things do. I guarantee, that you will discover some pretty amazing things within the TI-84.
Compared to other calculators, the TI-84 is pretty user-friendly. Don't be scared.
In my opinion, Texas Instruments' customer service is one of the best in the nation. Call them for specific questions, they're great at the basics but not-so hot at the advanced. Friendly & helpful people, though.
You need to re-install or, update the Ti 84 Plus OS. Since you just bought the calculator it is unusual that it is already to that point of clearing the RAM. You can connect a computer and your Ti 84 calculator together once you downloaded and, installed Ti Connect software on the computer. That way you can use the Ti OS Downloader that comes with Ti Connect software to install the newest Ti 84 Plus OS. Or, if you have a friend that has a Ti 84 Plus or, Ti 84 Plus Silver Edition you can connect the two calculators together through the IO link ports and, they can send you a copy of their OS while you receive it on your Ti 84.
Get this problem fixed as quick as you can. You do not want your OS to fail any more than what it already has. If you can not find another calculator to connect too, then you can connect through your computer. You may have a long road ahead of you getting the Ti Connect software and, drivers working right. Just remember to come back to your posting here and, post a comment of what ever is failing. This will notify me right away and, I'll walk you though it if necessary.
You're in the MATHPRINT mode. Press MODE and scroll down to the second page by repeatedly pressing down-arrow. On the top line, use left/right-arrow to highlight "CLASSIC." Press ENTER to set the mode, then press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode editor.
TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.
If that doesn't work, add a comment to this post and we'll go from there.
