Well, anything grounded (like the tree) has taken a 1 million amp spike.
humans die at 1amp. Electric chairs use 1 amp but 9-15 thousand volts. in this case the voltage is immeasurable but at an impressive million Amps your poor TV might have seen better viewing days. If your're posting you must have house electricity...check that one breaker controlling juice to the TV outlet. unplugg TV and let it sit for different periods of time each one getting longer... if no luck call the TV mortician hope this kinda helps let us know ~~~s

Your TV might very easily be destroyed now, from lightening damage. Lightening can come in on the cable, on the power line, all sorts of unexpected ways. I've personally been struck by lightening, plenty hard enough to destroy almost any electronic device... and I was working in a basement at the time.

SOURCE: after lightening storm dvd will not eject from

You could have poped a cap "capcitor inside" or a fuse that controles the DVD side. I would check both. Here is a tip also and maybe this will help out others too "never buy combo units" Why? Well the reason why is you have to open the whole unit to fix one side and there aweful to diagnose, in your case here if you cannot eject it seems there is no power getting to that side of the unit and checking these things mentioned above could help you in further fixing of this unit. Remember if its still under warrentee please seek manufacture advice before opening this unt yourself. Also I personally recommend you get a surge supressor for all your eletronics to advoid this kinda loss. Thanks and don't shoot the messanger here and please rate!

SOURCE: No power on Samsung TV after storm

Hello Zkarim,

I'm very sorry to hear about your unfortunate new's. I had the same problem in my own home maybe a week ago.

Basically if your power flickered on and off at anytime during this storm then there was a power surge that probably fried your TV.
* First check the power where the tv was plugged in. Is it a power strip or a surge protector ? Surge protectors typically have an on/off switch and a separate reset push button.

If it is a power strip then the tv fried because there was nothing to stop it from happening (not even the fuse). If it was plugged into a surge protector then it could be quiet a few years old and not as reliable or the surge was to powerful for the limit on the surge protector.

The only thing you can do personally is send it in for repair if it's under warranty, if it is not then you can have it looked at by an authorized repair technician in your area. Troubleshooting should be fairly low, and you will at least be able to find out your options once they find the defected part.

Thank you for choosing Fixya!

SOURCE: TV hit by lightening, won't even turn on

Well, at the very least, your TV needs a new power supply board. Since lightning damage is so severe and unpredictable, it typically is not worth the time/effort/cost to repair.

Check the main AC fuse, it may have blown because in the TV it has MOVs for surge protection that are installed after the main AC fuse, when the MOVs conduct, it will cause the main fuse to blow to stop any surge from coming through the second time.

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools, electronics knowledge, and know safety precaution then please read on:

SOURCE: Bad storm, lightening strike outside

I would start with your power supply. If you took a surge it is possible that you only blew a fuse. If it is a blown fuse, make sure you only use the same type fuse.

My HDTV went out in a lightening storm. What could it be?

Is your TV plugged into a surge protector? If not it very well may have gotten a power surge during the lightening storm that fried components in the TV.
Or is the TV connected to a cable box? It could be that the cable box took the hit if it's not plugged into a surge protector.
Or a possibility of both.

My envision model L32W961 volume goes from normal volume to blasting then back to normal. it started after lighning hit a tree beside the house.

Anytime and electrical storm is close enough to hit a tree, it sends all types of energy through everything. Did you have a surge protector on the TV? Sound to me like the TV has internal damage and needs repair or replacement. Have you tried to simply unplug the TV and wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. This sometimes will reset the microprocessor.

I have a panosonic plasma 42 inch tv. After a storm all I get when I turn it on is black and white static but all the menus display fine

Look to see if the rear video/audio inputs work (DVD etc) and if they do the damage is at the tuner in the set (nearby lightening can discharge into the cable or wires for signal.)

If using a box (cable or satellite) it may have took the hit.

A good idea if lightening storm is to not only unplug set (static discharge can come in via the power cord also) but disconnect signal source from set.

I have in extreme cases seen a nearby strike get in via the power lines and destroy almost every appliance plugged in even if not on.

It might have been blown out by the lightening storm. that happened to two of my tvs that were plugged in during a lightening storm. they both, and two dvd players, would not work after, but the ones that were not plugged in were fine. You should unplug your major electronic equipment during a storm, unless you have a power surge plug/equipment.
