Well, I don't think this is an issue with Hardware malfunction of the Printer... However, I suggest you to try few troubleshooting steps before you replace the ink cartidges for Printer.

Dear dgthorpe,
This indicates that printhead of your printer faulty. Commonly this problem come with short circuitry problem in printhead so it may harm logic board and carriage unit too. I suggest you to try checking with another printhead first.
