Question about Philips Smart 25TS54C 25" TV

Replacing Circuit Board Capacitor

I'm helping a friend trying to repair their tv. It's a Philips smart series 25ts54 c122. A part on the board has burned up (It's blue-green and assuming it's a capacitor) the position on the board it C506. Unfortunately it burned up enough I can't get any details from the piece. The TV started to smell funny and then smoke started coming out so they unplugged it. Later when they plugged it in, it wouldn't turn on but was making a quick ticking sound and then started smoking again. I removed the burn part and the TV now turns on and works without smoking. Obviously the parts there for a reason and would like to replace it but I don't know exactly what c506 is. Any help would be appreciated.

    Terryfic,

Are those parts from a circuit diagram listing that you have? Not that I don't trust you but I've been on too many sites recently that have people to claim to know what they're talking about when they don't. Suggestions are easy to rationalize but a specific part is either right or it's not and I don't to damage my friends TV with the wrong part. Also, do you know what particular function that part of the board controlls since it made noises and smoked when it was plugged in without being turned on (wouldn't power up with the bad part) - but when totally removed from the board the TV turned on, pictures OK, has sound, and seems to work OK. Just wondering.

OK, I replaced the capacitor and now the TV powers up and the sound is fine but all I get is a horizontal line about the middle of the screen. What happened? It was working OK without the capacitor at all and now I've tried it with and without the capacitor and all I get is the horizontal thin line.

I'll have to keep looking for ic501. I found IC500 by the video input area and they were loose so I resoldered them but no luck. I'll check for IC501

I checked D409 by the flyback and D410 (half the board away from the flyback). Both are registering fine provided I can assume an accurate reading while they're still on the board. Using a diode tester I get no reading one way and around 530-550mv drop the other way so, providing they aren't getting feedback from another path on the board, I think they're both OK. Any other ideas?

Solder connects on vertical output IC501.................

  • Vista Electronics Nov 21, 2007

Sorry, should be IC500.....FYI = Whenever any circuit board is

serviced, a certain amount of movement occurs. At times, the

result is a secondary issue completely unrelated to the original

problem......Since soldering the vertical output IC did not help,

your next check will be the B+ source(s) to run the vertical IC.

    Locate D409 / D410 ? diodes next to flyback xformer = check

    w/ ohmmeter = shorted ? Overheated-looking? = replace BOTH W/ part #483513037052 AND replace IC w/ part # 483520988531

all three at the SAME TIME !..................T.

With diagram in hand, check all voltages at pins of vertical o/p

IC......work back to power supply....or, I quote myself "check the

    B+ sources to run the IC"......next = try subbing the IC.....next =

    take it to a shop...........................T..........OUT.

I fixed this problem in my DVP642 by replacing a capacitor on the main power board where the power chord hooks in. Take the top cover off (after unplugging player). You'll be able to locate the bad capacitor on the circuit board located on the very right. Look for location marked c316 on the circuit board. A bad capacitor will be bulged up on top. The capacitor you're looking for will be a black barrel shape with an aluminum top, this aluminum top will be bulged up or leaking on the circuit board. Replace this capacitor by desoldering the two leads into the board and replacing with an identical part you can pick up at Radio Shack for a couple dollars. My repair for this identical problem was a success. The blinking light is the tip off for this particular problem on these Phillips models.
