For most washers, just close the lid. When the washer is unbalanced open the lid, rearrange the clothes and shut the lid. Washer will start spinning again.
yes there is a sensor that's is supposed to shut it down if the laod is too unbalanced, however yours seems to not be working, also, Sounds like one of the hangers are broken or came off. Take off the front or the top depending on what brand you have and check the four hangers that connect the drum to the bottom. You will have two in the back and two in the front. If they came off then simply reconnect, if broken then get the model number of the washer and take it to anappliance repair store so they can get or order the right one.
The spin cycle is used to rid the water by centrifugal force. As the tub spins, the water iis forced out of the clothes. The banging noise comes from the weight of clothes being on one side making the load unbalanced. The machine will absorb some minor unbalancing. If it gets real loud & the machine starts dancing, shut the machine off by raising the lid, when tub stops, rearrange clothes.

Hello, have to tell you that most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping noise during the spin, the load of cloth may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the cloths, then restart the machine. Repeat these steps if necessary.
On some of the maytag washers when an unbalanced load stops the maching it blows an internal fuse located behind the front panel on some stacking washer and dryer machines and under the counsel on some of the top load machines. ON the top load machines it is recomended that you change the lid switch with the fuse that comes with it.
There are two screws located on each side of the counsel. Remove the two screws and tilt the counsel up and locate the lid switch, fuse assembly. You can check the fuse at this point.
