The dvd's and cd's that aren't recognized might not be " finalized". Were they store bought or copied by someone with a dvd/cd burner ? When burning dvd's they need to be finalized so that other dvd players other than the one it was burned on can recognize them. Hope this helps.
if it playing cd's but not dvd's then you have to install a power dvd software used for plaving dvd's or if it is not playing cd also then you svd rom is curropt...................
this might be due to the lens of ur dvd rom is nt functioning properly. try to clean up by a lens cleaner. if this doesnt work then u hv to contact a technician
Well this may be due to the "south bridge" chip found on your motherboard. If it's defective, it won't recognise any USB.
However if it's a software or virus issue, re-format the laptop by the original recovery DVD.

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.
Give this a try : write a DVD at 1x speed (lowest speed) and test it on your laptop. If this works ok then either use better media or lower (e.g half) your writing speed........
Provide a CD/DVD cleaner disc and clean it maybe it help;
I encoutered that problem 3 months ago, the DVD ROM recognized only few DVD disc, other DVD's won't even the windows is freshly installed. The laptop was return back to the store they replace it.
However, in your case; it work fine before so maybe i suggest you to clean your DVD rom using the cleaner, if not work then , scan your computer with a potent antivirus, if this not work also, maybe i recommend to format and reinstall the system,
If all of those are not working maybe its time for you to enjoy the warranty of your laptop if the laptop has a warranty. hope this help.
