Sounds like the carb needs cleaning, it's running too rich. First check the choke cable is not broken and travels full range.

SOURCE: no power/rough idle/black smoke

either the choke is closed or the float is stuck open..if the float is stuck open, normally it will leak gas

SOURCE: Engine seems to flood out when increasing speed and dies

If it starts lightly smoking black smoke at high RPM it is flooding or getting too much fuel. The float is leaking you may have not set the float height correctly when you put that carb back together. Or the needle and set could be bad.

SOURCE: my 21 HP diesel zero turn mower starts blowing black smoke

Looks like you've got a good idea on what makes diesels smoke, so I'm sure you know that black smoke is almost always from too much fuel for the air that's going in. So it can be too much fuel or too little air. If your filters are good, the next things to check are the fuel pressure and the injectors.

I know diesels, but I don't have any specific experience with lawn mowers (kubota?). Since it stalls eventually, it sounds like it's not a single cylinder (although not for sure) so I'd check injector pump first.

SOURCE: engine smoking and missing

too much oil...drain it (all of it !!) and refill with "no more than" 2 qts...keep checking it as you fill...now...since it has been smoking, it will for a while until the oil residue in the muffler is burned out...also, replace the plugs...cleaning is no guarantee that they won't foul out...

SOURCE: I have a Briggs n

You have a blown head gasket. The gasket is leaking the fuel into the oil. You will have to replace the head gasket.

Briggs and Stratton running rich and smoking black.

Yes, black smoke is too rich, blue is oil and white is steam/condensation.

Surging is normally caused by air entering the inlet manifold or governor.

All Carburetors have adjustment
Needle height
Main Jet size
Idle Jet air control (often hidden under a silver disc).

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

I have a 13.5 hp briggs and stratton that had got gas in the oil and i changed it. stars good and runs perfect cold. when it worms up the throttle stops working it will only run at high idle with no Chang...

Float isn't working. It is leaking past the needle. Try taking the float out and use a q tip to clean out where the needle valve go's. And inspect the rubber tip carefully. If it has any mis shape or grove. Get a carb kit and rebuild it. That would be the thing to do in the first place. because the gas bypassing the piston and going into the oil will be enough for you to get a new motor too.

Hello folks i have a 1981 vette it smokes gray

hello. Thanks for choosing fixya! I would begin by getting this baby scanned. I agree with you that there are some carb. issues, such as gumming which could be cleared up with a couple of bottles of Seafoam, from your local auto parts store. Good luck with it. Regards, Joe

Briggs model 098902 0110-01 running really rich. puts out black smoke when idling. Could this be a diaphram problem?

Remove air filter element and test run. If you see improvement, replace the element.
Part #698369 for engines 2002 and NEWER
Part#272235 for engines 2001 and OLDER.

If same rich condition, replace diaphragm under carb.
Part #795083

Hope this helps!
