This looks like a CCD failure. Can the image be corrected in the PC software Which image editor are you using?
SOURCE: Hard to explain...
I just purchased one of these scanners secondhand, and I have the same problem. You're seeing the underside of the lid where the film strip conveyors and other mechanicals are located. The previous owner (original purchaser) had a piece of white printer paper taped to the underside of the lid in order to prevent this effect. I'm really baffled as to why HP didn't install an insert for users who don't scan photographic prints and film strips.

The problem is in the connection cable, Check the cable that connects your scanner with your computer, If still not working, try replacing it with a new one.

The scanner works with two different files running in the background HPQTRA08.exe and HPQSTE08.exe .
If one of the file is not running you will not be able to scan from solution centre.
So follow the documents i am sending you. I am sure you will be able to scan soon.

SOURCE: Hi I need the service
The old model scanner came with an old ISA SCSI plug-in card. Even if you had the card, it will not fit into ANY of the card slots on today's motherboards. That card could inly be inserted into a a motherboad from the pre-pentium days - like a motherboard with a 80286 processor. If you ae using a diffrent SCSI controller card I doubt if it will work with this old scaner. FYI, service manuals do not contain schematic diagams and would not cotain the info you need to get that scanner to work with a different scci controller. Sorry, but the 4p is just too old.
