Taste the water coming out of the filter ? should come from a cold water line, not the hot water line, funky smells and tastes come from your hot water heater. and I don't want to hear the hot water freezes faster bs. hot water heaters are full of stuff you don't want in your body. So if the water tastes ok....
sounds like you need to give the entire fridge a defrosting, clean it up real good. also have baking soda ready for monthly treatments, just crack a box open and stick it int the fridge or freezer.
These ice machines never did make quality ice as they just freeze still water, witch make cloudy, less than savory ice.
If you are a big ICE lover like me. a under the cabinet flowing ice machine is the best ice, as it last the longest(almost clear) and has no ill flavor.

SOURCE: Ice tastes funny and a strange metallic or plastic type smell

Sometimes the smell comes from something in the freezer or even the refrigeratior and makes the ice taste funny. My suggestion is to clean out the freezer compartment of anything frozen that has been there a while and may have freezer burn. That may be the funny smell you are experiencing.
Hope this will help you.

SOURCE: Bad tasting water and ice from refridgerator.

i agree with rpbuice but in addition to flushing the water line you may need to replace the line then using the water dispencer run out about a gallon of water thru the door. this will clear the reservoir of bad tasting water. for the i/m throw out all of your ice then let it make a couple of batches and throw out that ice as well be sure to clean your ice bucket very good to remove any lingering tastes from the old ice.
fyi bad tasting water is generally from bad water supplies. good luck..

Bad fan blower smell and bad smelling and tasting ice cubes from ice cube maker

If unit has a water dispenser, how does water taste? I've run across bell peppers that will emit a bad smell. Keep in mind 95% of all refrigerators circulate air from freezer to refrigerator side and then back. It continues to circulate air so bad produce from refrigerator side will get into freezer side and ice will absorb smell. First, dump all ice. Then line shelves in refrigerator side with newspaper, that absorb smells. You can even try kitty litter in small cups in refrigerator side. Bell peppers gives off that metallic smell and can take some time to get out of unit. Highly unlikely a motor is bad and you've already changed outside water line.

Ice maker stopped making ice

Here is a check list to use to verify ice maker is good or bad or if something else is causing the problem.
1) Has the water filter been changed recently, or does it need to be changed? The filter being old can cause a reduction on water and lower performance of anything else that requires water.
2) Check the temperature in the freezer. Even though things are frozen in there, the ice maker requires that the temperature be at least 10 degrees F to even cycle. Ideal would be around the 0 degree mark.
3) Check the fill tube where water comes into the ice maker. From time to time this will get blocked due to water freezing in the tube itself.
********* If the first three checks all pass, either the water valve is bad and not allowing water to come to the ice maker, or the ice maker itself is not calling for water **********
Depending on the age of the machine it might not be a bad idea to change the water valve and the ice maker together.

Ice from ice maker smells and taste bad

We have a similar fridge: part of the issue could be with the filter, GE has a 6 month filter and a 1 year filter. Might be time to change it (I believe the MWF filter is one year, the GWF is 6 months). Changing the filter helped in our case.

But overall, if you leave lots of leftovers in the fridge, the ice will pick up the smell. A couple of boxes of baking soda should help absorb the smell before it settles itself in the ice.
