Starts fine, runs for 45 minutes or so, then dies. Will start again when cool
I would suggest doing a compression check on it when cold, run it until it stalls out and again check the compression. If the compression drops then you have a sticking valve. As the engine heats up the valve is expanding in the sleeve and sticking; it can then loosen up when the engine cools and become operable again until it finally sticks in place for good. Then a valve job is in order.
Check your gas cap, make sure the vent hole in the cap is clear.
Testimonial: "Cleaning the gas cap and putting it on snug but not too tight, cleaning the filter, and changing the oil (again) and being careful not to overfill seemed to do the trick. Mower runs fine now and does not die. I did not do a compression check. Apparently it was not needed"

I cleaned the gas cap and now put it on snug but not too tight; I cleaned the air filter; I changed the oil and made sure it is not overfilled ~ and my mower now runs fine. No stalling. No need for a compression check or burnt valves.
