SOURCE: reset bios password dell latitude d520

Each manufacturer uses a backdoor password for this exact reason. for Dell - it is Dell. It may work, but if not try to remove the CMOS battery for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Turn the computer upside-down and to help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery before working inside the computer.

Remove the main battery: Slide the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer and then remove the battery from the battery bay.

Remove the CMOS battery- loosen the captive screw on the RAM cover, and then remove the cover. Use a plastic scribe to slide into the guide on the side of the coin-cell battery compartment, and lift the battery out.
When you replace the battery, insert it at a 30-degree angle under the clip with the positive (identified by a plus [+] symbol) side up, and then push it into place.

It sounds like someone has put a password on your BIOS on your laptop.

The BIOS is what boots up the laptop before Windows even begins to start.

This password will not let you do anything until it is removed.

The best way to fix this without knowing the password or who set it, is to discharge the battery that keeps the BIOS settings in check.

Basically, to do this you need to remove what's known as a CMOS battery from the laptop and leave it out for 5-15 minutes.

The CMOS battery for your laptop, and how to remove it, is located here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/multilang/SM/coinbatt.htm#wp1179960

Remove the battery for 15 minutes, put it back in. Your BIOS settings at this point will set back to default and the password will be gone.

I have a dell vostro 1700 that will not start with battery in and on mains it goes into diagnostic boot

when you say the battery is in, you refer to battery is actually plugged in while the ac adapter are connected? it means the laptop works fine with ac adapter alone? try updating the bios download from the support.dell.com

regarding the diagnostics. the partitioned where the diagnostics should be into was might wipe out during re-installation or something.

Bought used dell vostro 1700, wasnt told about the bios password.

Hi Jonnymac93,
the fastest way to clear a password would be to remove the cmos / bios battery. The manual for the Vostro 1700 can be found at the following link;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/en/OM/pdf/TT565A01MR.pdf
If you prefer the manual in htm, click this next link & choose htm format listed on the site;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/en/index.htm
Go to page 182 & 183 for instructions. The manual call this, Removing the Coin-Cell Battery.

Also here is notebooks driver site for the 1700;
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/manuals?~ck=ln&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

Good luck Johnny!
Run into trouble, post back.
