You need to replace the thermocouple. It unscrews from the thermostat on one end, and the other one hooks in a bracket. After replacment make sure the thermocouple bulb is in the pilot flame.

SOURCE: Pilot won't stay lit in Reliance 606 gas water heater

The Reliance 606 has an enclosed thermal couple. Before you try taking that assembly apart take a wire brush to the bottom opening directly under the burner. There is a metal filter on the very bottom of the water heater. It could be that the filter has gotten filled with dust or animal hair. It took a serviceman 2 days to figure this out for me. The water heater has to have good airflow through that filter to work well.

If you still have your owner's manual, you will need to call the manufacturer. They will need the model # & serial #. This particular brand has a fine mesh filter screen on the bottom (below the burner) that gets clogged and causes irregular pilot outages. They have a recall in which they will send you a new burner assembly with a reset switch built-in to it. They will send it to you for free, but you will need to hire your local propane co (at your expense) to install it and also clean the filter while they have the burner assembly out. Good luck. What pilot light assy. do I need to buy for model# 640y0rt4, water heater ??? please wont stay lit

check that the flame sensor is clean. It would be a stiff piece of wire that would sit right over where the pilot lite is. If it is dirty...it wont sense if there is a flame....and if it dosnt sense a flame....it wont let the pilot lite to turn on.

Reliance 606 water heater was in flooded basement had few inches of water up to it now wont light. What to do?

This could be a tough one without being able to examine it. First, have you precisely followed the relighting instructions printed on the heater (turn the knob to "pilot," hold down the button, etc.)? One other thought: the gas pressure to the pilot flame is very low - if some water got into its little supply pipe it could keep gas from getting to the pilot burner device. You would have to disconnect the pilot tube from the gas controller valve and blow it clear, then try again. Dealing with this type of gas problem can create dangerous conditions if not done properly. If water got into the gas controller valve (the one with the knobs and buttons) it will have to be replaced. If unsure, consult a plumber.
