Hi Kath,
I expect you have it sorted by now.
I think you might have had one off the developer tanks stuck or broken. If the developer roller does not turn then the colour quickly fades along the page. If you tried to do a test page and that was good then there was nothing wrong with that side of things.
Good luck.

YES, Possible faulty / contaminated Transfer system, I would get this serviced, as this is a more complex fix

I had this problem when I used a generic toner. I installed a xerox cyan toner, then printed many sheets of a large blue rectangle. After about 15 pages the blue started to spread into the shape, after 30 pages the blue was back. Printing a lot of blue was necessary to get the new toner thru the system.

All type of chemical coating "INKJET PAPER" can harm your laser printer.
If you want a perfect printing, just use a high quality plain paper.
Good luck.

If it is only happening in black then it has to be something prior to the toner reaching the transfer belt; such as toner, developer, imaging unit, or laser. It sounds like you've already cleaned the laser window, replaced the toner, and image unit, so I would inspect the developer. Remove the black image unit and use a flashlight to inspect how well toner is covering the magnetic roller on the developer. You may want to compare it to a developer of a working color to see if they look similar. Also, make sure there are no foreign objects near where the image units go. If an object came loose in there, the arm will not close correctly which could cause the image unit to not make contact with the developer. Hope this helps, and thanks for using Fixya.

Is your printer set to Economode in the printer settings? It may be and so its printing at low quality.
