Toshiba 42h81 When I try to do the convergence a few of the green "X"s are not where they should be and I can not match them. When I called a repair shop they said it was something that comminly goes out that costs like $400.00. I am just hoping to find a cheaper way to fix it.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

Heckler, your tv has blown parts in the convergence circuit so you need to stop pulling plugs or you will do more damage to the set. The convergence IC`s will need to be replaced and probably 1 or 2 support resistors, Then the set will have to be re-converged, the shop you talked to is correct that it`s a common problem, mine failed 8 months ago in my 53" Hitachi. $400 to do that repair is pretty pricey BUT it really depends on where you live, Major sized city`s charge big rent, taxes are higher etc. etc. so tv shops overhead is higher, I would get out the phone book and start calling all the shops in your area for price quotes. you need to replace both of your convergence ICs they are STK392-110 you can get new replacements at the following link and they provide free instalation instructions with pictures. Heres the link

you have a convergence problem that will require the replacement of the convergence amp ics.

Can you describe the issue a little more? It may be a convergence issue which is quite common on big screens. But there are quite a few issues that can cause a bad picture.

If it's convergence, you'll be able to tell by going to a news channel and looking at the text. If the convergence is bad you'll see a ghosting like image of 2 or 3 letters for each one that should be there.

If you are referring to the convergence alignment of red,green and blue........will require technical and mechanical skills.....
1) Pull chassis
2) Replace both STK392-110 convergence IC's
3) Reset alignment as needed........................................T.
