This only happens with DVD. This invented to keep copyright protection different in some regions of the world.
There are programs that rip a DVD and then you can burn it free of any region code. Some brands do sell DVD players without region code limitation.
Read the article on wiki about region code. The disk you try to play, comes from another country.

Loads disc but message says "wrong region" how to reset it?

You can't unless you can come by some region free reset software. Try google.com and type your player type then add the words "region free" and see what pops up.

When i put a dvd in my hitachi htdk185uk it says unknown disc what does this mean

Either a DVD with the wrong region code has been loaded, and your player doesn't recognise it, or you have inserted a disc which is either rewritable (or an incompatible format for your player), a blank DVD or CD, or the disc has not been finalised in a DVD recorder. It depends on the disc(s) you have, whether they are region coded or those using a compatible playback format (finalised DVD-Rs are the best as far as burned copies go).

Examples of incompatible formats for your player may include;
DVD-ROMs
DVD-RAMs (which are the wrong version/speed for your unit)
Mini-DVDs/CDs
CD-RWs
DVDs with a different region code to your player or rewritable discs

* When using shop-bought DVDs, including those purchased online, make sure their region code matches your player.

Message "wrong Region" appears in my Sony DVD -

DVD region is an anti-piracy method to block DVDs from other countrys to be played on a region where that DVD isn't available for selling. You still can watch that DVD by changing the DVD Player region code from options but be aware that you have a limited number of changes, after changes reach 0 you cannot change DVD region code anymore and your DVD player will be stucked to a certain region that you selected.

''Wrong Disk'' error

KM,

You'll need to check the region code of your player.

Make sure you have no discs in the player, and unplug the unit.
Plug it in and turn it on.
Open, then close the tray (with no disc!)
Press the Setup button, then select Load Setup
Press the Enter
While it it loading, press Menu.
When the box appears with a number, confirm it says 1 (region code 1 = USA). If it doesn't, please change it to 1 using the Up / Down buttons.
Press Enter to accept the change.

When I try to use player for a disc I burnt it says it loading then it says wrong disc. It says it is a region 1

If the disc is under region 1 it should play, try using another disc on the player and if it works, it means that the disc needs replacement

Wrong Disc

Are you referring to a prerecorded commercially produced DVD?

Discs are Region Coded This means that you will not be able to watch DVDs intended for use in a different country, unless you have a multi region player. .

There are two video standard formats, NTSC which is mostly North America, and PAL which is the rest of the world. Some players will play both, others won't. Some DVD players allow you to select the format.
