I remove the whole hinge and top from the back put the old hinge on the new top then move the burner to the new top put the whole hinge on the back of the oven.. hope is is a little help
the element may be open circuit, test it by a continuity test. the actual element is inside the metal outer surrounded by a ceramic compound -you will not be able to see any breaks hence the electrical test.
