Generally the motor bearings get gummed up. There is a hole on each side of the motor. Suggest WD40 to free up the motor shaft. If you are real handy the motor can be disassembled the the bearings cleaned of the gunk and then oiled and reassembled. Not a job for all.

SOURCE: IBM CORRECTING SELECTRIC II TYPEWRITER

Is the key stuck in the down position? If you pull the key off you should see a spring underneath. Maybe out of position or damaged.

SOURCE: how to install a ribbon in an IBM selectric II

Pull the orange lever located on the carrier to the side. Make sure the ribbon passes through the ribbon lift guide next to the platen. The ribbon should go behind the the thick part of the guide and through the fingers to the inside on the outside of the guide. There is a wire (usually with a white platice roller on it) sticking up from the carrier. Maker sure the ribbon goes aroung the outside of the wire. Snap the ribbon down on the carrier then close the orange lever back in place.

SOURCE: IBM Selectric II typewriter stuck in correcting position

If you know how to remove the right dust cover (black inside the T/W below the carrier) next to the R. side frame is the correction set up mech. spray some WD40 on the arms especially where they pivot, they should free up.

Problem with Selectric II typewriter engaging when turned on

Your on/off switch may be bad but it sounds like your motor needs to be flushed, lubed, and possibly have a bushing installed.

Ibm selectric II typewriter prints a different letter than the one typed. the typing ball appears to be very sluggish.

By this time in thier life selectrics have become very gummed up which causes many many problems, you need a chemical cleaning and lubrication. It may be cheaper to buy an IBM Wheelwriter on EBAY.

I have a couple of IBM Selectric II Typewriters and over the last few months both just quit as if they are getting no power. One started working again but then quit again..any ideas on how to fix. Also had...

Most selectrics at this time are suffering from many gummy parts.
All of these problems are probably repairable with a good chemical cleaning and lube.

My IBM selectric II typewriter carriage stuck in right margin

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

IBM Selectric II

The return clutch torque limiter is off or broken. If you take the right dust cover off it is on the turning hub around the middle of the typewriter. a small spring about 1.25 inches long with a hook on the end. I have been fixing these for 35 years. good luck. Lawrence
