I had same problem and found the hinge/bearing for the flash corroded, probably due to sea spray. Remove side arms on flash which limit the amount of travel BUT ENSURE YOU NOTE WHICH GOES ON WHICH SIDE AND WHICH WAY UP! (Not doing that cost me an afternoon of trial and error!) Remove the three screws (two short one long) which hold the cover on the flash and remove the cover (toward the front). Now you can ease out the bearing but not remove it totally because the flash wires go through it. (right hand side viewed from the front). Clean it (Iso-Propyl alcohol and cotton bud) then reassemble and check flash is VERY free to move. Note side arm screws have a shoulder on which the arms can swivel ensure they are correctly located or the flash will seize up when you tighten the screws. Good luck, do post if this works for you so others will know.

Canon EOS Rebel XT Error 05 or BUSY

The Error 05 means the build in flash cannot be raised.
In the moment it should pop up, something was blocking the free movement. Could be caused by the way you were holding the camera. Could be happening, while you were pressing the flash button, or when you are in the basic zone shooting mode, such as portrait, which needs the use of the flash.
Switch the camera off an then on again. Move an eventually cause of the blocking and press the shutter realise button again.

I have a Canon Rebel. When I try to take pictures the flash "hood" or something automatically pops up but somehow the light doesn't flash and all I hear are 3 clicks. Then the screen says error...

Aprilm,

Error 5 is a flash error. What sounds like it happening is the mechanical part of the flash is working allowing for the pop-up, but the camera thinks there is an external flash present. A repair shop should be able to address the issue. Usually it's a problem with the micro switches "inside" the flash shoe.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you.

Canon EOS Rebel Error message E05

Go the the Canon support website and enter your camera model. If there is something you can do, it's there.
The E05 error says the lens is jammed or not working correctly. My guess is you need to take it to Canon.
This happens if sand gets in the lens or the camera is dropped.

Err 05

In my case, I borrowed a camera and when I got it back, err 05 appears. I've located a bit of old orange juice which sticked one of the sensors - you can see the sensors when flash is popped out.
