Your question was posted under "Pond and Water Garden Pumps", but I assume you are really asking about a swimming pool filter. Unscrew the control valve from the valve body and check the condition of the O-ring. If it is nicked, torn, or worn allowing water to flow past the valve, buy a replacement at your local hardware store or swimming pool supply. Pop the old one off, and put the new one in the track where the old one was. If it doesn't want to stretch to fit, put the new seal in HOT water for a few minutes and try again. Lubricating the O-ring with some Vaseline or other brand petroleum jelly will make operating the valve easier and cut down on wear of the new seal.

I,ve just opened my pool and when I backwash the filter the water comes out at very high pressure. This is not normally the case certainly not for the last 10 year. Is there a problem with the filter,

No.
Nothing in filter will increase water pressure. Whatever water the pump sucks in will flow out of whatever port is open, in the case of backwash, a Waste port open. So... What the pumps takes in, you will see flow out when you backwash.
No problems that I can think of to look for.

Backwashing A Sand Filter with A Push/Pull Slide Valve or Multiport Valve

Lots of people are first time pool owners and pool professionals forget to teach these "newbies" about the simplest aspects of pool ownership.

One of the biggest questions we receive from new homeowners is "How do I go about backwashing my sand filter exactly?"

It doesn't matter if you have a Hayward, Pentair, Jandy, Sta-Rite or any other number of Sand Filters on the market they all utilize the same basic valves for backwashing; a push/pull slide valve or a multiport valve.

To backwash with a multiport valve:
1) Shut off pump motor.
2) Press down on valve handle, rotate valve from FILTER to BACKWASH position.
3) Roll out any backwash hose or open any waste line valves.
4) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
5) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
6) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
7) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to RINSE position. Run on rinse for 15 - 25 seconds.
8) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to FILTER position.
9) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
10) Roll up backwash hose so the dogs use it as a chew toy.

To Backwash a sand filter with a slide valve:
1) Shut off pump motor, roll out backwash hose.
2) Twist to unlock plunger T-handle, push or pull(depending on manufaturer) the plunger 2" - 3".
3) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
4) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
5) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
6) Shut off pump motor and push T-handle back down into locked position.
7) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
8) Roll up backwash hose.

Now you are a backwash Guru!

I need to know what all the settings are like bacwash filter on the valve system

FILTER is the valve position when the system is in the normal filtering mode.
When you backwash the filter you first need to turn off the pump, place in BACKWASH position, and run the motor for 45 seconds (or until the backwash water is clear). Turn off pump and run in the FILTER position for 15 seconds. Repeat twice more.
The RINSE position is to clear any dirt in initial start-up cleaning, plus resetting filter bed after backwashing.
The WASTE
position is for vacuuming directly to waste, lowering pool level, or draining the pool.
The CLOSED position is for shutting off all flow through the valve.
The RECIRCULATE position allows water to flow from the pump through the valve and directly to the pool.

You will probably only to use the FILTER, BACKWASH and maybe the RINSE valve position. The RINSE position is not as important as indicated by the fact that many backwash valves don't have a RINSE position.

I hope this helps.

BACKWASH b> PUMP - BOTTOM - THROUGH FILTER - TOP - WASTE For reversing flow for cleaning filter. RINSE b> PUMP - TOP - THROUGH FILTER - BOTTOM - WASTE For initial start-up cleaning, plus resetting filter bed after backwashing. WASTE b> PUMP - WASTE For vacuuming directly to waste, lowering pool level/draining pool. CLOSED b> NO CIRCULATION PAST PUMP PORT For shutting off all flow to filter and pool. RECIRCULATE b> PUMP - RETURN For bypassing filter, but circulating pool water. May be plumbed for "off-system" pool water access. Ideal for Jet-Air® fittings. WINTER b> VALVE NOT IN USE

My pump is on filter but is draining the water out please help

The water Has to be going out the 'backwash' or 'waste' line.Either that or you have a leak in the plumbing. If the backwash/waste valve is set in the 'filter' position and there is still water escaping through the backwash/waste line, it means that the o-ring or spider gasket needs to be replaced or re-seated. If it is a multi-port valve (one that you spin to select the setting as opposed to a 'push/pull valve) you can try shutting off the pump; do a complete turn, 360 degrees, from the 'filter' setting all the way back to the 'filter' setting. This sometimes helps the spider gasket re-seat

How do you backwash to lower water level with the Pinnacle pump?

The model of pump doesn't really matter,You backwash the filter by changing the position of the backwash valve (while the pump is off). If you have a D.E. filter, be sure to add fresh D.E. powder to the filter when you are back in "filter" position.

When I backwash or rinse my pump reservoir fills to the top when I filter I have air bubbles at pool discharge and reservoir about 3/4 full and air is evident. Do I need to start digging up my skimmer line...

When backwashing or rinsing the same water is used as in filtering.(skimmer and main drain) so I don't think skimmer damage is the issue. Check if the pool water is low at the skimmer after the backwash cycle, Also check to see if the skimmer weir gate (flapper) is stuck in the upright position. I would suggest 2 main checks. Fill the pool higher than usual, back wash, ensure the pool water level is 1/2 way up the skimmer level and try again. Also, if your lines are valved right, shut off the skimmer during the filter cycle and see what happens. Lastly, the gasket on your multi-port valve may be bad.

What do i do with the waste line port on the multiport valve on a hayward filter. do i attach a fitting to stop air

No. That port is there for when you backwash or pump to waste. You normally put a hose adapter there that allows for a collapsable backwash line to be attached when ready to backwash the filter. If it is leaking water there when the valve is set to something other than waste or backwash yuou need to replace the internal gasket in the valve.

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.
