You should only get that screen when it's charging on the wall charger or when it is hooked up to your computer via the USB cord.

SOURCE: vivitar 8225 when powered on comes up with msdc
This is a Manufacturing problem. There is absolutly nothing that can be done to fix it other than to send it back. This same thing happened to me twice. A lot of Vivitar cameras have this problem as well as many others that are usually not the consumers fault. Just a glitch in the technology. I alone have gone through four Vivitar cameras in the last six months. The best thing to do is contact Vivitar directly. This is there website: www.vivitar.com It is best to see if you can find the number for technical support. To see if they can give you a refund or replace it for you. I hope this helps. -Richard

It's supposed to do that, informing you that it's in mass storage mode. Once connected you control it from the computer, not the camera.

The MSDC option in digital cameras stands for Mass Storage Device Class. It is one of the many subclasses of the USB computer peripheral connection protocol.
This class as implemented in digital cameras, allows a connection between a computer and a digital camera by showing the digital camera, when connected to the computer, as a removable disk drive, temporarily attached to the computer. Pictures taken are retrieved using either cut and paste, copy and paste or drag and drop from the digital camera's picture folder onto a real hard drive or other writeable media available in the computer.
